A wasted opportunity

As anyone likely to be in the market for this book will already know, Nick Drake was possibly unique.

Nic Jones was an astonishingly original guitarist, master of wild tunings; Gordon Lightfoot a consummate songwriter; Art Garfunkel a sensitive and distinctive singer. But none of them combined all these attributes as Nick Drake did. Only Joni Mitchell seems comparable, and she didn't record until her late twenties; Nick made Five Leaves Left when he wasn't even old enough to sign the recording contract, and five years later he was dead.

Nick's music, then, is more than the sum of its parts, the melody, guitar-work, lyrics and voice interweaving to produce an "emergent phenomenon" — the Nick Drake magic.

How did he do it? If we expect to find a clue, it should surely be in a book like the present one. Here, however, we have some good news and some bad news. First, the good news.

CONTENTS OF THE BOOK

Nick's legacy is three studio albums, some alternative- and out-takes, plus a few odds and ends, mostly collected on Time of No Reply. All the tunes from the main albums are notated here including the instrumentals from Bryter Later. There are also five songs from Time of No Reply: the title track, "Rider on the Wheel", "Black Eyed Dog", "Hanging on a Star", and "Voice from a Mountain". "I Was Made to Love Magic", "Joey", "Clothes of Sand", "Mayfair" and "Strange meeting II" are omitted.

The book is intelligently and attractively designed. There is a thoughtful preface by Nick's preferred arranger, Robert Kirby, and then the complete lyrics are given, interspersed with many interesting and unfamiliar family photographs of Nick.

The songs are then presented in staff notation, grouped by album.

Now the bad news. The format throughout — unfortunately for guitarists — is vocal line plus piano. Guitar tunings and capo positions are specified, and chord symbols and fretboard diagrams appear above the staff, but there is no tab. Even "Horn", a pure guitar piece, is presented on a piano staff.

Also unfortunately for guitarists , the songs are notated at absolute pitch — so that (for instance) "The Thoughts of Mary Jane" (which Nick plays in A capo'd at 6) appears in E'.

And so we come to the crucial question:

HOW ACCURATE ARE THE TRANSCRIPTIONS?

I haven't yet had a chance to work right through the book, but the melody lines appear to be accurate, as do the lyrics — something one should be able to take for granted, but often can't.

However, the accompaniments are not Nick's but arrangements by one Roger Day (it says in small print at the end). Where the guitar part is easily played on the piano — as with the aforementioned "Horn" — they are reasonably close; but this is not often the case with Nick's music. To be brutally frank, many of these arrangements could fairly be called travesties. One of the constant joys of discovering Nick's music, is that if you can only find the right tuning, many of his pieces almost play themselves. But here, most of that is lost.

For instance , "Road" (bizarrely labelled "Radio" on my copy of Pink Moon, incidentally) is a miniature masterpiece; the transcription, however, is a mere shadow of the original, and even the bass line is wrong. Furthermore, I'm not even convinced that the tuning given (DGDDAD capo'd at 4) is correct; it makes parts of the piece (the original, that is) virtually impossible, or at least very difficult. EADEBE capo'd at 2 seems to me more likely, and certainly much easier.

SUMMARY

If you're a pianist, or if you're just interested in the lyrics and melody lines, then this is a good, even an excellent book.

If you're a guitarist who wants to know what Nick played, however, then things are less rosy. It seems to me that an honest effort has been made to present information for guitarists; but it just isn't adequate.

You can certainly use this book as a starting point. If you have the time, energy and inclination, you can (as I have done, out of curiosity) copy a piano part here into a notation program such as Finale or Sibelius, and transpose it to the original guitar (i.e. sans capo) key. If you keep the voices in separate layers, you can then copy and paste the bass and treble clefs into a single guitar (8vb treble) clef. However, you will not in most cases get a correct guitar part without a lot of tweaking.

"More than accurate"? I think not.

The sad part of all this is that no one can now publish accurate guitar transcriptions without inviting a copyright infringement suit.

Accurate for Guitarists and Other Musicians

Trying to transcribe the utterly otherwordly sounds that emanated from Drake's acoustic guitar has proved fruitless to those of us who've attempted to figure out what tunings he uses on a particular track, what kind of guitar (6 or 12 string), what chord voicings/fingerings, etc. Luckily, we now have this book. It's more than accurate, and it has unlocked the secrets of many of the songs that musicians have probably given up trying to learn to play. So invest in this book. It's beautifully produced, also, with a nice layout that includes lyrics and photos.

Also, for guitarists who can't read music, there are chord tabulatures included. From what I can tell, everything is in the right key, and you're also prompted to use a capo on certain songs.

Finally, and just a "good neighbor" note from a longtime acoustic guitarist, Drake often tuned some of his strings higher (deliberately) to get different open tunings. There are ways around this (like tuning all the strings down a whole step, then slapping on a capo so you'll be in the right key but without the danger of having a taut string snap on you). Be careful if you tune your strings higher than concert pitch because they can break if you play with a lot of attack and rhythm. Use a light touch if you're tuning, say, your D string up a whole step to E, because most guitars aren't designed to hold that kind of tension on the neck, which can slowly begin to bow over time unless you remember to tune all the strings back to concert pitch when you're done.

There are all songs from the 3 albums Nick Drake recorded, all the lyrics and extra bonus photographs.It's nice to have even if you can't play guitar . Pity that is so difficult to find this book at a reasonable price,It's the most complete song collection ever made,but there are no tablatures, so to figure out finger picking it's an hard job.. probably just lots of practice and dedication...anyway you get the best starting point to Nick Drake music with all songs tunings and the chords illustrated

Simple minded

Someone I care for has just gone into a major clinical depression so I've been reading everything I could get my hands on to understand both him and the impact on me and our relationship. Of all the books I've read, this one was least helpful. Perhaps if I'd just hatched out of an egg and had no experience with life, it might give me information I didn't already have from living every day. It is so simple-minded, condescending and addresses the obvious so blandly - I felt it was a total waste of money. Anne Sheffield's book on Surviving when They're Depressed was a godsend - as was Terence Real's on men's depression. This one - gave me nothing at all. I don't usually slam things but this was useless in my opinion.

Somewhat helpful, but doesn't deliver what subtitle promises

This is a good resource, but a bit repetitive and not as user friendly as I would like. When dealing with a major depressive, you don't have the energy to wade through a lot of this book. A structure with "key info" and "in-depth knowledge", allowing the reader to get the most important information up front then go back for the details would be easier to use.

Ultimately, I wanted more focus on ME, the person who cares about a someone who is depressed, and less on the depressed person. There are a lot of good books out there for the depressed person. My expectations of this book were to have concrete ways to not "catch" the "contagious depression", to not "lose myself" as the subtitle suggests. After reading the book, I don't see how my interactions with my two majorly depressed friends over the last year could have been handled much differently. And I did catch their depression, and I did lose myself for a time. So while I feel more educated about depression in general, I still am looking for more and better ideas for protecting myself while still helping my loved ones.

eye-opening to my own problems with his depression

My lover has recently recognised that he suffers from depression and sought treatment for it. This book helped me to acknowledge and recognise many of my own strong emotional feelings, doubts and problems of the past months, that only now I'm realising were partly or wholly related to his depression and our inability to communicate about it without becoming overly emotional. It especially stresses the way that these reactions to depression are not only normal, but that you can put them to your benifit in the fight against depression. It stresses that suffering from someone else's depression is normal and that the solution is in working together, being more intimate and communicating better, rather than to think of giving up. It gives many tips and eyeopeners and things to hold on to when trying to change things, and stresses the power of communication. It does not have all the answers, but tries to make you stronger to find answers together. It gave me hope and reassured me about the strenght of our relation.

Kindergarten-Grade 2-Fister Farnello loves dirt. One day he escapes his bath and runs into the woods where he meets a giant named Dirt Man, and the two become instant friends. They spend days playing until Fister becomes so filthy that even his own mother does not recognize him. Even the birds and mice that have taken up residence in his hair begin to complain. When moss appears in his bellybutton and a thick green cloud of stink comes out of his mouth instead of words, Dirt Boy can't take it anymore. He runs through the woods and back to his house. At first, his mother thinks he is a monster, but when she sprays him with a hose, "the faint shape of a certain long-lost boy" is revealed. "It took twenty-three bars of soap, sixteen bottles of shampoo, one hundred and seventy-nine gallons of bathwater, forty-four million bubbles, and eleven tubes of toothpaste to finally get Fister Farnello clean." This is a witty fantasy about a topic with which children are quite familiar. The bright, bold watercolor-and-gouache illustrations in various shades of green and brown capture the essence of filth. In addition, Manders used "acrylic paint, crackle medium, modeling paste, colored pencils, sponges, fingers, and old toothbrushes" to create Dirt Boy. The squishy delight of wallowing in mud and mess is the elemental appeal for young preschoolers in this mucky picture book. Fister escapes authority, his "clean-and-mean mother" who tries to force him into the bath. He runs away to the woods, where he finds a home in the bellybutton of a giant, who hasn't taken a bath in a thousand years. They play dirt games. When birds nest in Fister's hair and mice snuggle on his body, he begins to feel icky and slimy, and when the giant begins to use the word delicious, Fister runs home to mother, who scrubs and scrubs him deliciously clean. The pictures--in watercolor and gouache--glory in the dirt. There are close-ups of the giant's teeth covered in green gunk, of mushrooms sprouting from the boy's toes, and of Fister's stinky breath blowing out in a thick, green cloud. The story stays true to the slapstick fun of getting dirty, even as it admits to the coziness and comfort of being clean. Hazel Rochman

Worthwhile if you're not too busy.

Interesting book, and I don't regret reading it, but . . . poorly written and excessively wordy. At times it gets very dull; I skimmed a LOT. Toward the end, the weirdness factor increased by, oh, a hundred or so. By that time I definitely was NOT buying it. Still, interesting, and I think there are some good things here worth knowing.

"Heart of Darkness," which appeared at the very beginning of our century, was a Cassandra cry announcing the end of Victorian Europe, on the verge of transforming itself into the Europe of violence," wrote the critic Czeslaw Milosz.
Originally published in 1902, Heart of Darkness remains one of this century's most enduring--and harrowing--works of fiction. Written several years after Conrad's grueling sojourn in the Belgian Congo, the novel tells the story of Marlow, a seaman who undertakes his own journey into the African jungle to find the tormented white trader Kurtz. Rich in irony and spellbinding prose, Heart of Darkness is a complex meditation on colonialism, evil, and the thin line between civilization and barbarity. This edition contains selections from Conrad's Congo Diary of 1890--the first notes, in effect, for the novel which was composed at the end of that decade.

About the Author
Jospeh Conrad (1957-1924) grew up amid political unrest in Russian-occupied Poland. After twenty years at sea with the French and British merchant navies, he settled in England in 1894. Over the next three decades he revolutionized the English novel with works such as Typhoon (1902), Youth (1902), Nostromo (1904), The Secret Agent (1907), Under Western Eyes (1911), Chance (1913), and Victory (1915).

Caryl Phillips is the author of many works of fiction and nonfiction. His novel A Distant Shore won the Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award. His other awards include the Martin Luther King Memorial Prize, a Guggenheim Fellowship, and the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Phillips is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature and lives in New York City.

I've had to read this for a few classes and ...

I've had to read this for a few classes and I'm not a huge fan. The writing is a bit dense. I'm not particularly knowledgeable about literature, but I know there's quite a bit of analysis to be done here. I see this as more of a personal preference thing- I'd rather be reading Louise Gluck or Tracy Brimhall, that's all.

Excellent edition of classic novel

Published in 1899, Joseph Conrad's HEART OF DARKNESS is like a fingerpost for its time, pointing the way of human preoccupations as they probed the final frontiers left in the world to discover, both geographically and intrapersonally, equipped only with a 19th century worldview. Where fear and discomfort with the unknown had once been associated with leaving land and heading into the open sea, Conrad now placed it in turning inward, turning from the sea up a river that penetrates an unknown land.

This is the story related one night to a group of London dwellers gathered on a dock boat in the safety and familiarity of the Thames. The speaker, a garrulous veteran seaman named Marlow, remembers how as a younger man he had pushed for the adventurous assignment of taking a steamboat up the Congo in search of a company's missing agent, Kurtz. His is a tale of horror, of what can happen to a person disengaged from civilization as it is known. This is an atmospheric exploration of knowledge, experience, innocence and morality. Conrad's language is complex but not opaque, has action but also a lot of description. As Virginia Woolf once said, Conrad could not write badly to save his own life.

That his vision requires rooting the horror in a hostile jungle culture and its customs can present a problem for a contemporary audience. The Modern Library has done a good job in introducing this edition with notable criticism, positive and negative, excerpted from across the 20th century, including pieces by Mencken, Virginia Woolf, E.M. Forster and, more recently, Chinua Achebe. This edition also includes passages from Conrad's 1890 journal when he was traveling in the Congo. Several different publishers are publishing this novel, but this edition is the best I found.

Southern Fried Small Town

I really enjoyed reading Azalea Springs. The characters were well developed and the dialogue screamed Deep South. I felt like I was dropped right into the heart of North Carolina. I became a fly on the walls of Azalea Springs residents. A town filled with some unique and well developed characters. There were some nice twists and turns throughout the book. Just when you think you figured out who was doing what...something happened to turn everything upside down. The history of the town was just as colorful and interesting as the town folk. I would love to read more adventures of Michael Fleming. A really enjoyable read. I look forward to seeing more from Jeff Tolley.

Scary, fun romp through the deep, steamy South!

This book has many elements you might expect in a crime novel set in the Deep South- serious rednecks, evil klansmen, and corrupt law enforcement, but the characters do not behave in any way that you might predict. The author has a way of showing the human side of even the most evil character, as well as the "evil" in places you would least expect it.

I look forward to Mr. Tolley's next work! Will it be more about Lawyer Michael Fleming? Gary Tatum? The ever intrepid Buck Duncan? The setting certainly lends itself to a sequel!
