Buyer Beware

This book has some value but generally was a big disappointment. The title is completely misleading for starters. This is not a wireless LAN design book, but rather a generic network design reference that includes wireless. There is at best ~10-15% wireless content and even that is pretty thin and full of errors. Discussion of wireless security is nonexistent and references WEP and dynamic WEP, more than WPA2/CCMP. A more appropriate title would be 'Cisco Network assessment and design methodology', or Cisco Network Design Guide'. Well I have those books and they are way better than this. The authoring and content is fair at best. Numerous redundant statements, redundant and lame illustrations (the same illustration of access points connected to an Ethernet switch in a hub and spoke configuration is used like 20 times, telling you nothing) and numerous technical errors. It is effectively little more than a series of checklist items and primitive explanations on what data to collect and why and how to analyze it, including wireless. It was just tedious to read this. Useful for a soup to nuts enterprise assessment project (just the kind of thing Cisco SEs do so they can find all the areas where they can sell you more gear), but again, there are better books than this. It does contain lots of tables, which are useful examples of spreadsheets you should create during the data collection and design documentation process to keep track of network details like what VLANs and subnets are allocated to which branch offices. Overall however, while this has 'Cisco' in the title, it is absolutely not up to the quality of Cisco Press books. It smells like someone just threw together a bunch of Cisco SE procedures together and called it a book. Note that this is not a Cisco press book.

I'd only recommend this to someone with a few years of networking experience who has a working vocabulary (vlans, DHCP, access control lists, etc.) and wants a a big picture checklist of all the areas to investigate when performing an enterprise network assessment. Don't expect to learn much about wireless networking here. Look at other Cisco books or the CWNA series instead.

A Necessary and Beautiful Book

Two Birds in a Tree identifies with shocking clarity what business already is, what it cannot help but be: an integral part of ecosystems, human and non-human communities, mental and physical landscapes, and the fate of future generations. Failing to recognize this inseparability accounts for the devastation prevailing business practices have wreaked on the planet, and it also explains why current business models cannot prosper for long. Ram Nidumolu's extraordinary book restores this recognition, revealing all the ways businesses have operated contrary to their own concrete realities -- ignoring the cost of "externalities" (pollution, deforestation, income inequalities), following a fantastical path of "unlimited" growth. It is time for a new accounting. Two Birds in a Tree looks squarely at the limits of growth and internalizes the externalities. Drawing on the wisdom of the Upanishads and the testimonies of executives seeking a new path, this book charts the transition from an economy of doing and having to an economy of being, from the business of "acting upon" to the business of coexistence.

Nidumolu's message is powerful because it is not simply philanthropic. Two Birds in a Tree is a frank, thoroughly pragmatic guide to good business practice. A Global 500 consultant delivers a book to stir the heart, still the mind, and stuff the wallet

Two Birds in a Tree is a banquet of raw facts, sweet anecdotes, and subtle insights, and the meat of its message is clear: Business can be a vigorous spiritual pursuit on a personal and collective scale; a means by which we nourish the long-term interests of the economy, humanity, nature, and Being, the ineffable source of existence itself.

Given recent economic crises, the dominant image of Business inspires an attitude of cynicism and detachment in spiritually-oriented people -- myself included. Using stories of contemporary CEOs and reflections on his own journey as a business leader, Ram Nidumolu shows that spiritual concepts are far from idealistic or impractical; they are practiced and beloved by CEOs and companies we encounter every day. These chapters restore hope in the business endeavor as a path untainted by the compulsion to profit without principle.

As a long-time spiritual student who is considering the path of entrepreneurship, I give Two Birds in a Tree my highest recommendation; I will return to it many times for inspiration and guidance.

Two Birds in a Tree

First, to disclose, the author shared earlier drafts of the book with me for comment. For me, reading those drafts was an education and an inspiration. I grapple daily with my own limited perspective on life as I engage with the unpredictable, changing everyday world, resulting in much counterproductive distraction, anxiety, presumption, and other reactions to trying to control it all. This is the life, the awareness, of the "lower bird" of the Two Birds title. I ponder how my ongoing desire for self-realization, to become the "higher bird", fits into this messy day-to-day material existence. So reading Ram Nidumolu's poetic, insightful account of his journey to integrate the higher bird awareness of the Upanishads into his personal life really hit home. And learning about the power of that ancient wisdom to transform the competitive, very material world of business today fills me with hope.

Two Birds makes abundantly clear that understanding the message of the Upanishads is highly relevant to the challenges facing our planet and our societies today; it provides a framework for developing Being-based awareness that can lead to responsible personal, social and environmental relationships. The book gears the practical application of this knowledge to business leaders, but really, the message is universal. And the promise of action grounded in Being is not fantasy. Ram gives ample examples of business leaders acting with awareness of our interconnections to each other and to nature that yield both profit and sustainability. One fervently wishes that people entering the competitive, profit-focused world of business might read and be touched by the experience of these role models, and find practical tools and guideposts in the ancient wisdom of the Upanishads, so eloquently presented in Two Birds.

A very helpful book

This book presents to the lector in a comprehensive way the necesary mathematical methods needed by any physicist, engineer or student. It includes themes such as elementary vector calculus, matrix algebra and transformations, a very extensive study of boundary value problems, elementary applicationsof the Laplace Tansform, Integral Transforms, Variation and Perturbation Methods, Elements of Probability Theory, among others. Each point is well exposed, with many explamples and problems (although it doesn't provide the answers). A defect may be the fact that some points (although few) are not fully developed, and in some cases one will probably have to read a more basic-level book on those points (As a freshman, it happened to me that to understand chapters 7 and 8, about functions of a comples variable and calculus of residues, I had to read an introductory book on complex variable). It's develop of many math topics and it's application to Physics and Engineering and the independance of many chapters from the others, makes this book a very helpful one.

About the Author
Larry Jeffus is a welder with over 55 years of welding experience, and he has his own well-equipped welding shop. In his welding career he has passed many welding certification tests in a wide variety of processes, positions, and on many different material types and thicknesses. Larry has provided welding and professional consulting services locally, nationally, and internationally to major corporations, small businesses, government agencies, schools, colleges, and individuals. He is a Life Member of the American Welding Society. Larry Jeffus has over forty years experience as a dedicated classroom teacher and is the author of several Delmar Cengage Learning welding publications. Prior to retiring from teaching, Professor Jeffus taught at Eastfield College, part of the Dallas County Community College District. Since retiring from full-time teaching, he remains very active in the welding community, especially in the field of education. He serves on several welding program technical advisory committees and has visited high school, college, and technical campuses in more than forty states and four foreign countries. Professor Jeffus was selected as Outstanding Post-Secondary Technical Educator in the State of Texas by the Texas Technical Society. Professor Jeffus has served for 12 years as a board member on the Texas Workforce Investment Council in the Texas Governor's office where he works to develop a skilled workforce and bring economic development to the state. He served as a member of the Apprenticeship Project Leadership Team where he helped establish apprenticeship training programs for Texas, and he has made numerous trips to Washington lobbying for vocational and technical education. Larry Jeffus holds a Bachelor of Science Degree and has completed post graduate studies.

Amazing and intriguing at the same time.

This book has everything you want to know about crystals. I didn't really know about the uses of crystal so that makes my reason for getting this book. I am lucky to know many things about crystal by just downloading this. I learned that crystals can absorb negative energy, can be programmed, can be cleansed so it can be used again. That crystal healing is an alternative treatment that is non-invasive. They are really amazing and intriguing at the same time. Sean Parker says the treatment can harmonize the body, mind, spirit, and emotions while increasing feelings of well-being. This book is easy to read and well-organized. Sean also explains how crystals function when healing. This book is interesting and well-researched.

One Strange Book

What a strange book. This book is full of information about different crystals and supposed healing powers, the author certainly did a lot of research into the subject. I find it a little weird how people believe that a rock (crystal) has the ability to heal your body of various ailments. While it does have a ton of information, I do not now nor will I ever put my faith in a rock for healing, but to each their own. You can tell the author took a lot of time to write this book as it seems well researched and edited. Mr. Parker did a fine job writing about a subject he obviously believes in. Well done! I recommend this book only to those who believe in this sort of thing.

This is really an impressive. It is really hard to gather knowlegde about the gem stones. Most of the people dont know much about gem stones like what are they used for and what is their benefit. This book gives a clear description of all the unknown facts about gems..

About the Author
Daniel P. Mannix (1911-1997) was born in Pennsylvania and after graduating from college he joined a circus working as a sword-swallower, mind-reader, escapologist and lock-picker. A renowned journalist, he wrote some twenty books including Memories of a Sword-swallower, and co-wrote with Malcolm Cowley Black Cargoes, about the African slave trade.

Fascinating and terrible

Daniel Mannix has written an extraordinarily detailed and intriguing treatise on the history and validity of torture, through every culture, era and continent in the world. From the earliest societies in Greece to modern-day usage, every aspect of torture is covered in this exhaustive volume.
It took me a while to get through Mannix's book, since I often read it in small blocks. Too much of this sort of information at once can be an almost nauseating experience - and I'm not particularly squeamish. However, after finishing it I found it to be a pretty rewarding venture that really gets you thinking about some important philosophical and historical concepts. I'll come back to this.
Mannix writes rather tersely and emotionally detached about the most unthinkable acts of humankind. He covers specific torture devices - what they were and how they were used - and then often recounts several specific situations when the device was used and what the results were. Every society and age has "contributed" something to the legacy of torture and Mannix leaves nobody out. Whether it's the Aztecs who once sacrificed 70,000 people in one event, to the Australian penal colonies, he not only covers it but also relates the differences and similarities between the devices and methods employed. Just some of the groups covered are the Native Americans, the Nazis, the Europeans throughout every century, Africans, South Americans, the North American colonies, the Inquisition, modern-day police in every major country, Asians of every era and dynasty, Vikings, African-American slaves, and the witch trials. He makes careful notes of when a torture device was reused or modified in some way from society to society.
The specific stories he relates are always shocking and beyond belief, yet they are well-documented accounts. The ingenuity of torturers is truly staggering, rivaling some of the greatest inventors of all time. How these monsters came to devote enough of their minds and time to devising these horrible instruments is unthinkable. Yet Mannix explores every last deep, dark corner of these demented minds.
There are several areas of the humanities that Mannix touches upon, sometimes deliberately, sometimes inadvertently. In general he tries to stick to the facts and avoid inserting his opinion. On occasion, however, he can't resist and shows his hand with a carefully written sentence or a colorful adverb. One area that he didn't specifically touch upon that got me thinking a great deal, is that of the reparations forced on certain social groups by other social groups for past crimes. Various races, even in America, consider the atrocities enacted on their race to be the worst in humankind's history. Reading Mannix's book will show that this is the result of a very narrow and uninformed view of history. The brutal decimation of hundreds of thousands of Aztecs, the mass executions of nearly two million people by Ghengis Khan, the horrible slave trades of the ancient Romans, the demented torturings of the Inquisition - in modern times only the atrocities of Hitler seem to directly compare to these events. While Mannix deftly avoids opinions for most of the book, he does close his work with a chapter on corporeal punishment and its effectiveness as a deterrent of crime. This chapter was remarkably well-written and presents thought-out arguments presenting both sides of the debate. He gives no-nonsense, logical examples of why in some cases corporeal punishment can never work, and in other cases where it clearly has proven effective. It was a surprisingly well-done cap to his book. After reading hundreds of pages of what the worst of humankind is capable of, it helped put things in perspective.
As a book, it could be a little tighter. There is no logical flow from chapter to chapter, nor is there an index. As a result it sometimes feels as though Mannix is repeating himself, and you are a little lost as to the overall historical context of the situation. The chapters are also not titled, nor is there an index, so there is no easy way to go to a specific era or torture device you want to research.
This book also scared me slightly, since it showed me just what human beings are capable of doing to each other. The Romans killed each other for sport. They would crucify slaves in the Coliseum and then gamble on who would die first, die last, etc. There was a time when humans - the same specie that lives today - considered this entertainment. To be honest, this is one of the reasons why Reality TV bothers me so much. Aside from putting completely talentless people on television, it also harkens back to the days when blood-thirsty fans screamed and applauded the misery of others. While it's very different to watch a person eating a live cockroach than to watch a lion eat a person, I believe the same sick desire is at the root of both audiences. It may seem a very big leap, to go from where we are now to watching a TV show where someone may die, but five years ago I would never have dreamt people would be picking a spouse from a game show, or eating the genitalia of a pig as "entertainment." It happens every week now on primetime. Even the show Jackass on MTV, while often funny, still puts these men in situations where they might be killed by several different methods. Mark my words, it will get worse. In the same way that this book became easier for me to read after the first fifty pages - as I became desensitized to it - so will we as a nation become more and more desensitized to what we consider entertaining. If you doubt we can go so far as to kill people for entertainment, I only point you to Mannix's book for a quick reminder of where we once were, not so long ago.

History like you won't see in a textbook

The book is well writen and non-biased. The author presents the material in a way that is non-judgemental considering the behaviour of the people he writes about.
When I hear discussions of capital/corporal punishment, I like to read excerpts from the book to gain perspective. The book begins with the torture and execution of an entire Jewish family because of their refusal to eat pork. He goes on to describe the games, the inquisition, and the fanatics who were in control throughout history.
It's not an easy book to read. I had to put it down several times because it was so graphic. However, it's not gratuitous violence. It was compelling enough to pick back up again.
The book questions the effectiveness of punishment. The final pages are the arguments from both sides, those who are proponants and opponants of capitol or corporal punishment. I thought he did a good job of presenting the different arguments.

Interesting compilation of facts, rumors, and ideals

Daniel P. Mannix has given us a great compilation of facts, rumors, and ideals in "The History of Torture." He examines the pros and cons of torture, discussing whether it even works and in what circumstances it works best, as well as when and why it can be totally ineffective. He discusses the reactions and ideals of the people who did the torturing, delving into what they hoped to accomplish by torturing each other and how the different ways of torturing affected the person being tortured and the people watching, if any.
Mannix puts everything into historic perspective. He talks about how different societies grew up around corporal punishment (Rome, France, America, etc) and discusses different morals and ideals throughout the past thousand or so years that allowed torture to take place. His facts are interlaced with stories and rumors, which to me are just as interesting because it gives a sense of what people believed versus what actually took place. Religious factions play a large role in torture, and Mannix reviews which religious sects tortured and when and why they stopped.
Mannix discusses the different types of torture, from the instruments to the uses of each torture, and gives examples of each. He relates different torture devices to instruments he has already written about, which gave a sense of how torture evolved. Mannix also tells of which societies were (or are) the most effective at torturing their victims.
All in all, it was a very interesting read. I feel that I've learned a lot from this book, and I am very interested in continuing to learn more. This book was a great starting point.
