Handy reference.

The Sky atlas companion goes along perfectly with the Sky Atlas itself. Everyone of those obscure deep sky objects, like those open clusters not in the NGC, have little entries. If you have the Sky Atlas 2000 already, this book is a great supplement.

essential, minimal key to sky atlas 2000

other reviewers have drilled down on details of this book's contents, so i'll limit myself to a few dissents. the book is essentially an alphabetical directory of all the marked deep sky objects in the sky atlas 2000, about a dozen items listed on each page. given for each item is its type (galaxy, open cluster, planetary nebula, globular cluster, etc.), constellation, precise celestial coordinates, angular size, visual magnitude and the sky atlas 2000 chart(s) where it is found, followed by a brief description that includes for example its physical size, number of stars, distance in light years, and (for galaxies) the hubble type.

this book is designed to be used directly alongside the sky atlas; it's not a stand alone reference. one reviewer complained about the cross referencing system: this is based on the sky atlas 2000 labeling with an implicit preference ordering (explained in the introduction, page ix). thus, the same object is labeled NGC3587, M97, The Owl Nebula on chart 2 of the sky atlas, but you must look under "owl nebula" to find its entry in the companion -- proper names are given precedence over catalog numbers and, among catalogs, the messier number takes precedence over the NGC number. (caldwell numbers are not used in the sky atlas but are cross referenced to their NGC or other number in the companion.) the same reviewer complained that there was no named star list but this is already given in the sky atlas index, along with the messier list and a list of constellations. and while the book is not spiral bound and does not lie flat for pages near the front or back covers, spiral bindings often chafe, crimp or tear pages if you try to turn pages too quickly, which isn't very friendly in a lookup reference.

for me, the big lapse in this book is its failure to elucidate the catalogs referred to. what exactly does NGC, or C, or B, or Pal, or IC, J, E, vdB, UGC, SL, SH, Ru or PK refer to? who compiled the lists, and when, and why, and what objects do they contain, and how many? just "NGC" without a number would serve as the perfect place to insert a brief description of this huge list and how it was compiled from 18th and 19th century observations, and "IC" could explain why this supplemental catalog was necessary. the catalogs are not even identified in the bibliography: instead, bare denotations ("B is for Barnard") are buried in the text without further comment.

Star Hopping or Page Hopping?

I received my sky atlas 2000 second edition companion book (I should receive the atlas this week). It is pretty good but right off the bat I have a complaint. In the main section of the book they only list the details of an object by its common name. This is a pain. For example, lets say that you are looking up M57. So you turn to all of the M's and when you get to M57 it say "Please see Ring Nebula" so then you have to flip to the R's and find Ring Nebula. Now if you also want to look up M58 you now have to go back to the M's (what a pain). I guess I will have to go through the book and write in at least the chart number of each object. I wish they would have at least done that. Their note could have said something like. "Chart 8, see Ring Nebula for additional information" Besides that the book is pretty good and they have different ways of looking up things. They even have a section that has all of the DSO's per map.

Now has far as each object that is listed goes the book lacks detail. The only thing provided is the bare minimum. So if you want additional information I guess you will have to go to the web. A small picture of each object even if it were black and white would have been nice.

Another thing missing although it might have made the book to big is a listing of bright stars and double stars. They recommend another two volume book or a CD ROM for that info. Having the double stars listed would have given the user a whole new set of night targets. And having the bright stars listed would have been nice even if they only gave the RA and DEC. If the RA and DEC's were listed the user could use this information as jumping off points when trying to find the DSO's.

It looks like I might have to pick up another set of books to help me with my jumping off points. But I will wait until I receive my atlas before deciding.

The book does what it is supposed to do and that is tell you what chart each object is located on and for that it does pretty darn good. I just wish they would have gone the extra mile and made the book a little more useful.

A little more information about the SA 2000 Companion:

The book says it contains descriptions and data for all 2,700 Star Clusters, Nebulae, and Galaxies shown in the Sky Atlas 2000.0 2nd edition.

The main section of the book, pages 1-227 is a complete listing of all the DSO's in alphabetical order. Quoting from the book "here is where you turn if you already have an object in mind and want to know three things:

1. Whether or not it is shown in the atlas 2. If so what char or charts it appears on 3. It celestial coordinates, size, brightness, and a description of its physical characteristics and appearance in a backyard telescope.

Next, the chart key on pages 228-229 is a miniature, simplified version of that found at the end of the atlas itself - a useful reminder of the chart layout.

Finally, the appendix on pages 231-281 alphabetically list all DSO's objects again, this time by chart number. Each of the atlas's large charts 1-26 is dealt with in turn, followed by each of the close-up charts of selected regions (A1 - A5, B1 & B2). This section of the book can be of help when you want to explor a particular reigon of the sky. Let's say you are already viewing the galaxy M33, which appears on Chart 4 of the atlas. You can turn to page 237 for a compact "hit list" of other object that, because they are alos on Chart 4, are similarly placed for viewing at the same time of the night or season of the year.. The appendix includes only the bare essentials: Object name, type, celestial coordinates, apparent magnitude, and constellation."

I like the Alphabetical list a lot. It makes it quick and easy to find objects. And because it's alphabetical all of the M's (for the most part, more on this in a minute), NGC's, IC's or other lists are all together. This prevents the need for multiple lists. Now the bad part of the book is that they have broken out some objects out of a common list because of a common name. Here are some examples of what I mean. Right off the bat when you get to M1 there is a note that says - See Crab Nebula; So you have to turn back in the book to the C's to find Crab Nebula it's a pain. M1 is on page 47 but Crab Nebula is on page 18. So I wrote in my book under M1 that information. If they would have simply said under M1 See Crab Nebula, Page 18, Chart 5 that would have been better. If they would have said "Crab Nebula, SNR Tau 05h 34.5m +22� 01' 6x4 Chart 5 mag. 8.4" it would have been perfect.

So going down the M list in the book these are a few of the ones you either have to flip forward or backwards in the book for with nothing more than a description that says "See so and so". M8 See Lagoon Nebula, M16 See Eagle Nebula (I wrote in page 25 charts 15 & 16), M17 See Omega Nebula, M20 See Trifid Nebula (I wrote in Page 223, Chart 22). While M20 is listed on page 49. I think you can see my frustration... With a little more effort they could have made the book a whole lot better.

NGC's

First let me start by saying every NGC is not listed. In fact the first one is NGC 14 then it jumps to 16, then to 23 and 24, then to 40, then to 45, then to 50, then to 55. The last NGC entry is 7822. The same nonsensical logic is applied here. For example NGC 7092 on page 200 say See M39 which is on (hang on let me look it up) page 51, chart 9.

If these flaws were corrected and a better description written about the object the book would be nearly perfect for what it is designed to do.

High praise for William F. Buckley, Jr. ~ again.

William F. Buckley introduced to our Republic the undermining of the nation’s higher education via an unfortunate and relentless liberal agenda within academia. This Buckley classic reveals a disease that had infected most universities by the end of World War II ~ atheism and socialism. This book is an easy read and is a remarkable cultural achievement by the then 25 year old Buckley.

The forgotten subtitle of Buckley's book "academic freedom is a superstition" in America was correct and has been since the late 1890's when religious associations with their founding Christian churches were severed. The antecedents to both atheism and socialism within higher academia by 1900 were cast aside in the name of academic freedom of expression and progressiveness. Yale long ago lost the traditional values that placed it, at one time, among the nation’s elite.

Buckley pointed insight still rings true; "Freedom breeds inequality. Unless you have freedom to be unequal, there is no such thing as freedom."

There was no academic freedom at Yale in 1951 (or as early as the late 1890's) and there is certainly no freedom there now. If anything, this malignancy of academic bigotry (which Buckley so eloquently describes) has metastasized to the point that certain death awaits any Man who seeks God within the halls of Yale University.

Buckley is humorous while exposing the anti-Christian bigotry of the "sophisticated," "open-minded," and "tolerant" Left. No wonder the leaders of Yale hated Buckley's book. They prefer that parents and contributors send in their money without any pesky questions about what Yale was teaching.

The Life of Luke...

As a huge fan of Star Wars, I really enjoyed this book. Sure, it's geared more towards kids, but adults will find it to be a decent read as well. This books tells us a little about what it was like for Luke growing up on Tatooine. We first see him as a 4 year old little boy who, even at that age, could sense the presence of others. Ben Kanobi hadn't made himself to known to Luke at that age, but he did watch over the boy everywhere he went, and Luke felt it.

The next time we see him he's a 7 year old boy curious about life beyond his desert planet. He and his Uncle Owen clash often...Owen doesn't understand why Luke isn't more careful, and Luke doesn't understand why he and his Aunt Beru won't tell him anything about his father, or why Ben Kenobi is completely off limits.

From there we jump to Luke's 13th year, and we stick around the teenage years much longer. How he amuses himself with his friends, the trouble he gets into with one friend in particular, having to say goodbye to his best friend (and others) who go off to join the Academy while Luke is stuck on his farm, and what happened the day before his uncle bought those famous droids (this was a scene that was cut from the movie, but you can find it on YouTube).

After that, there are a couple chapters dedicated to various missions after the Battle of Yavin. Luke is still very young and unskilled with his new Jedi powers, but he's a fast learner. He gets himself into dangerous situations, but always manages to come out in one piece (with the help of his friends and droids).

Overall, a great book. Especially for children (or adults) who are fans of the original movies and want to know some background about their favorite Jedi. It's well written and a quick read...glad I picked it up.

A children's book adults can enjoy

[[VIDEOID:mo2G30JIJUYW5CN]]I bought A New Hope: The Life of Luke Skywalker for my 8 year-old daughter, but I also read it myself. I must say, I was impressed with the presentation. It comes in a sleeve with brilliant artwork shown as pictured on Amazon. Inside is a hardcover book with cover art to rival the sleeve. Wow.

This is a chapter book, so no pictures inside. It is slightly too difficult for my daughter just yet. She couldn't understand the Prologue but she could read the first chapter. I have no doubt she'll be able to read this next year.

As Luke embarks on a quest for information about his father, he looks back on his life from the age of four until adulthood. The story ends sometime after "Return of the Jedi" but before "Tatooine Ghost." If you've ever wondered what Luke's life was like as a child, this is the only book I've found it in. His childhood was very well written, with references to "Tatooine Ghost" for continuity. Ryder Windham brought him to life exactly as I would have imagined him. His aunt and uncle were completely in character, just like out of the movies, and we were able to see more of Luke's relationship with them.

Also included are scenes with Luke's friends that were cut out of the original movie. Here, he is a teen, not exactly the most popular kid on the planet. It's inspirational for children to see the kid who couldn't quite fit in become the great Jedi Knight.

We don't see much of Han and Leia, but some of the best scenes involve Luke and Leia arguing over his search for information about their father. I had just finished reading the Black Fleet Crisis trilogy and Leia's tone in "The Life of Luke Skywalker" is reminiscent of the tongue lashing she gave him in "Before the Storm." It is very much Leia, very well captured. I can hear her now.

My only quibble is Luke doesn't seem completely mature until he finds himself at the end of the book. This is after "Return of the Jedi," where in most books and in the movie, he is already carrying himself as a wizened Jedi. Most children don't read those other books and I don't think they'd notice, so it's not a major problem. In fact, they might not be able to identify with a more mature character. Overall, it was a light read with a satisfying conclusion. Great for children and their parents.

Filling in the gaps

I really enjoyed this book. I have followed all of the Star Wars series books from Scholastic (Jedi Apprentice, Jedi Quest, Last of the Jedi, and Rebel Force)and I believe this book links into those stories as well as what happened before, and after the movies. For those who haven't read the Star Wars comics, Have you ever wondered what Luke was doing prior to the events in Star Wars: A New Hope? Have you ever wondered about his relationship with Owen Lars? Do you want to know how the rebels found Hoth? Do you want to see Luke uncover information about Anakin Skywalker? All of these events are depicted in this book. The only negative thing about this book is that the events prior to The Empire Strikes Back are briefly cover. I would have liked to have had this area explored in more depth. Good Book for the New PCAT, Bad on Review Problems

Was given this book along with a few others to study for the PCAT. I used this book primarily because it is the only one that reflects the changes made to the PCAT starting summer 2016. Granted I've only made it through the biology section and part of the chemistry during the time of this review.

Pros:
- Only study guide to reflect the new PCAT so far
- Online practice exams mostly reflect the changes announced by the PCAT in timing and content
- There are tear out study charts in the back of the book

Cons:
- Not nearly enough practice problems at the end of each chapter.
- There are typos in a few chapters. Most are minor and obvious (VI instead of IV), and others are more detrimental (they get the ploidy / N number of chromosomes mixed up twice in the meiosis section).
- The new PCAT will have some word problems in the math section, but the online practice exams for Kaplan don't have word problems.
- Because of the lack of practice problems, the math section looks like it is not very helpful.

I recommend you use this book as your primary study book and buy one or two more for supplement practice practice problems.

USE OTHER MATERIALS WITH KAPLAN PCAT

I really, really want to like this book, but you shouldn't rely solely on it. I studied the entire book (read all the pages except reading), took the practice tests, and reviewed some more and my composite was 56 percentile.
Here's the breakdown:
Chem: 68
Bio: 46
Math: 41
Reading: 71

I'm not okay with the bio and math score. I think the Kaplan does decent on bio, but I had a lot of test questions surround medicines in particular that weren't covered in the book. I'm incredibly unhappy about this.
In addition, the math section doesn't prepare you at all for the test. It is poor in material (especially vectors, which I had at least 4 questions on) and it doesn't prepare you for the real thing.
Additionally the kaplan tests are way more difficult than the real thing. I scores a 20 percentile and 40 percentile on those, and did much better on the real thing.
The Kaplans readings are all science related, which is awful, and they usually bore me to death. The real PCAT readings cover a vast range of genres, and is more entertaining/engaging to read IMO.
I can't stress enough that the math study section is NOT good enough. Don't rely on it. Use outside material.
This has been mentioned over and over again, but there isn't enough questions in the book. Absolutely useless when you're trying to reinforce the information you learn.

Buy this book + Dr. Collins+ update

I studied this book for about a month and took the exam on Nov.4. My composite was 96 percentile.

Chem:98
Reading:34
Math:99
As a non-native speaker, it was impossible for me to improve my reading over a short period of time, so I gave up. I'm sure you guys can do better than me in this section. Fortunately most pharmacy schools only require a minimum score of 20 in reading section.

Talking about the book, I have to say kaplan PCAT is a must buy. Frankly speaking, everything on this book can possibly be in the PCAT exam. However, THIS BOOK DOES NOT COVER EVERYTHING IN THE EXAM, which means you have to buy something else or search online for those info. (for example the 4+2 and 2+2 reaction in organic chemistry are not mentioned in the book).

Many people have problems on math section, and complain the book for not providing enough info. The book is actually very informative, but the review questions are no where near the question types in the PCAT exam. The PCAT math is very very tricky. It does not test your ability to solve problems, it actually tests your ability to estimate the range of the solution and pick the right answer as fast as possible. Of course you have to know everything on this book, but if you really want to experience how the real test feels like, buy the official practice test from pearson.

Last thing I want to talk about is the online practice coming with this book. They do provide a good simulation of the test environment. Maybe the reading section is good, I don't know because I have never been an expert of English. The difficulty of the practice does not match the real exam. So if you get a poor score don't worry, it doesn't matter. I used Dr. Collins' material for practice most of the time. Be sure to buy the update as well.

Overall, considering that this book is only ~$30 bucks, I highly recommend you guys to buy this book.

About the Author
Lisbeth Marcher and Sonja Fich are two of the cofounders of the Bodynamic Institute, a worldwide organization that offers Bodynamic Analysis training and services. Marcher is president of the European Association for Body-Psychotherapy. Fich is a psychotherapist, bodynamic analyst, and relaxation educator. Both live in Denmark.

An Important Textbook

This "encyclopedia" is a most important reference for serious students of body oriented psychotherapy. While it is most useful in the context of Bodynamic Analysis, the volume is a rich resource of complex and detailed information that body therapists can study to enrich their practices. The book could benifit from more conceptual material. Not easy but deep.

Useful Only within the Framework Of Bodynamic Analysis

This is an extremely high quality book packed with information. However the terminology and taxonomy of information is all specialized according to bodynamic analysis. This book is not an introduction or explanation of bodynamic analysis either. It is more like a reference book for practitioners. Without that training I cannot make use of this book. The title makes it seem more general in applicability.

About the Author
Albert Benjamin Simpson was the founder of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. Born on Prince Edward Island, Canada, Simpson was raised in the Scottish presbyterian tradition. He was educated at Knox College, Toronto, and subsequently ordained into the Presbyterian Church of Canada. After pastoring churches in Ontario, Kentucky, and New York, he began a mission to the immigrants and the unchurched of New York City. This small mission, driven by Simpson's immense energy and his Spirit-filled Christian faith, led to the founding of the Christian and Missionary Alliance. A. B. Simpson was not only a talented organizer and preacher but also a popular hymn writer and author.
