Theories of Human Development, by Barbara M. Newman, Philip R. Newman

Key human development theories that continue to guide research and practice are examined in this engaging text. Ten key theories are grouped into three families - those that emphasize biological systems, environmental factors, and those that reflect an interaction between the two. This organization enhances students’ ability to evaluate, compare, and contrast theories both within and across families. Each family is introduced with an overview of their unique perspectives and the rationale for grouping them together. Discussion of each theory includes the cultural/historical context during the theory’s development, its key concepts and ideas, extensions of the theory in contemporary work, an example showing a modification of the theory, an application of how the theory is used to inform practice, and an analysis of how the theory answers 6 basic questions that a human development theory should address. Each chapter includes an overview of the strengths and weaknesses of the theories to facilitate comparisons. Theories that have a clear lifespan focus along with cases and examples that address issues across the lifespan are included

The second edition features:

-A new chapter on bioecological theory that highlights the increased use of this theory in the development of family, school, and community intervention programs.

-A new epilogue that examines the same case via each of the ten theories illustrating their similarities and differences and how these ideas cast a unique light on a common situation.

-New opening cases that bring theory to life along with narrative that links the case to the chapter’s concepts, guiding questions that help students compare theoretical perspectives, critical thinking questions that focus on using the theory to interpret the case and personal life experiences, and recommended resources that extend students’ understanding.

-More examples from various disciplines that address topics students are likely to encounter as professionals.

-A new glossary that defines the boldfaced key terms.

-Enhanced website at www.psypress.com/9781848726673 that provides instructors with a test bank, Power points, discussion questions and activities, additional cases with questions, teaching notes for using the book with various types of majors, and a conversion guide outlining changes to the new edition and students with key terms with hot links to their definitions, chapter summaries and outlines, and additional resources for further study.

-Updated research and applications highlight the latest scientific developments.

Ideal for advanced undergraduate or beginning graduate courses in theories of development, lifespan or child development taught in psychology, human development, family studies, education, and social work.

Review

"This is an essential text for courses on psychological theories of human development. The book is organized to maximize students’ understanding of their contributions, cultural and historical contexts, and similarities and differences. Complex ideas are presented clearly, comprehensively, and accessibly, as brought to life through the use of case studies and guiding questions." – Judith G. Smetana, University of Rochester, USA

"This text offers a clear view on lifespan development and would be an excellent resource for human development and developmental psychology courses. The case vignettes, guiding questions, and critical thinking exercises facilitate a deep understanding of developmental theories and related real-world applications." -Katharine Ann Buck, University of Saint Joseph, USA

"In an era when advancements in statistical analyses have been emphasized to the detriment of conceptual richness, Newman & Newman have masterfully written an engaging book that stimulates critical thinking and applied foci, establishing theoretical understanding as the foundation for research and practice." – Rob Palkovitz, University of Delaware, USA

"This edition is every bit as good as the first -- it fosters critical thinking by explaining how and why different theories of development provide distinctive routes for understanding the field, and how they frame research. The book draws all these theories together by keeping in view the biological, psychological and societal levels of analysis. It is ideal for upper level undergraduates and graduate students who really want a strong grasp of the field of human development." – Dominic Abrams, University of Kent, UK

"The book is written at an optimal level for comprehension. ... I felt as if I could open the book to any page, start reading and understand what the author was trying to communicate. ... I already use the Newman & Newman text for my Human Development ... graduate level course. ...I would seriously consider adopting it because ... the students like it." – Davidio Dupree, University of Pennsylvania, USA

"Students often comment that the book is very clear and not intimidating. ...The array of theories covered ... is a strength compared to competing titles. ... Newman ... does a better job at bringing the theories up-to-date. ... I will likely be switching back to ... Newman ... due to the inclusion of the bioecological chapter." - Hillary Fouts, University of Tennessee-Knoxville, USA

"I would seriously consider [Newman] for adoption. ... [It is] current, well-written and organized, and serves as a solid introduction to developmental theories. ... I appreciate the lifespan approach. ...The authors do a very nice job of providing clear applications of each theory." – Michele Gregoire Gill, University of Central Florida, USA

"The theories were presented in a straightforward, easy to read, and understandable manner. ... Content, writing style, clarity, accuracy and timeliness were excellent. The basic terms and concepts were well defined. ... I would consider replacing [our current] ... text [with Newman]." – Lydia B. Smith, University of North Carolina – Charlotte, USA

"The figures ... [that] show the relationships across theories will be very helpful for the visual learner. ...The questions to guide the reader at the beginning of the chapter are excellent. Also, including the key words, further research, and discussion questions are excellent additions." – Hillary Merk, University of Portland, USA

As a human development major, I was already familiar with most of these theories, but I felt like this book really took it to the next level moving beyond the basics of theories and into more intricate details.

Misses the Mark
By Bo
I believe I have read all of Josh Lanyon's M/M books and this is the first one I have rated below four stars. It pains me. Why? Because the plot is convoluted and simply not believable, and the two MCs, Jefferson and George, are vacuous--something no other Lanyon character has ever achieved.

Jefferson is painfully nave and just plain stupid about life upon a) graduating from college with a degree in family-dictated architecture when he wants make documentary movies instead; b) using the money for a planned engagement ring that is no longer needed because either he dumped Amy or she dumped him and taking a trip to Europe with the cash; and c) getting caught up in daily adventures that threatens his life at each turn. Who'd want to marry that kind of guy anyway, undecided sexual orientation taken into consideration or not.

George is Clark Kent and sometimes Superman, but always uptight about his feelings about his childhood and college best friend Jefferson, but so reticent that he simply bores you to death.

There are too many cell phones lost (the last one of which is magically recovered apparently without the author telling us how), too many saved-by-the-maybe spook incidents, and a bit of sex here and there that sometimes works.

Ironically, it's the last two paragraphs which may save the day here because, as implied, there could be a sequel. If that happens, there could be a chance that I would get to like these guys.

Fun Read – Mystery, Adventure, Love and Coming of Age
By Alan Arthur Katz
Josh Lanyon is one of my favorite authors, and has been for ages. She has created at least two classic series: The Adrien English Mysteries and Holmes and Moriarity (not Sherlock), plus a host of exciting and well-written stand-alone titles.

Jefferson Blythe is definitely cut from the same cloth as many of the author’s other protagonists: an innocent, hapless young man, mild-mannered, and not very adept, who somehow manages to figure out the mystery and get the drop on the evildoers.

Dumped by his fiance upon graduation from university, he uses the money he’d saved for his honeymoon to take a two-week tour of Europe. It was his grandfather’s suggestion. It appears that granddad is the only member of the family with any spunk. Jefferson’s parents spend a great deal of time and energy maintaining a faade of wealth and propriety, and expect their son to do the same. They’re simply not very concerned with his own desires or dreams. But grandfather wants Jefferson to take a brief journey onto the “wild side”, a chance to spread his wings and experience the world.

And that’s exactly what Jefferson intends to do. The book opens at London’s Heathrow Airport, where Jefferson arrives, and his surreal adventure begins. Some crazy young woman accosts him at baggage claim, disdains his “disguise”, and tries to force him to go with her. He takes off for the underground station, dodging crowds to lose the insane girl who seems to think she knows him, though he’s never been to England (or for that matter, anywhere in Europe) before.

He manages to elude the girl and make his way to his aunt’s townhouse. She’s out of town, but was generous enough to offer him her home while he’s in the UK. Unexpectedly, her son, Jefferson’s obnoxious cousin, is about to get busy with a girl and won’t even let him in the door. He leaves him stranded, in the middle of the street. With neither a hotel nor the wildest idea what to do next, he calls the only other person he knows in London, his childhood friend, George.

George is several years older than Jefferson, but the two were always close, until they weren’t. In fact, Jefferson’s refused all communication from George for the last four years. The estrangement between the men came about when George admitted he was gay. Probably because Jefferson had had a crush on George for years, he turned his back and ran away, deeply wounding the faithful and protective George to the quick. You see, Jefferson refuses to acknowledge that he’s gay. He’s not only in the closet, he’s in denial, because if he were gay, his parents would not approve and, like so many gay romance heroes, he’s still pretty stuck in the “pleasing the parents” thing. Fortunately, George is kinder to Jefferson than Jefferson’s been to him, and reluctantly gives him directions to his flat, where George will put him up for a day, until he can get into his aunt’s town house or a hotel room.

George, however, is not exactly what he purports to be, an editor at a small classics boutique publishing house. His apartment is ultra-modern and appointed expensively. He obviously has a lot more money than an editor of obscure intellectual books should make, and there are no obscure classics on his bookshelves

Nonetheless, he comes to Jefferson’s rescue time and time again. That is, each time the crazy girl shows up with a massive goon and tries to kidnap, assault, or attempt to kill him. And the crazy girl has an uncanny ability to track him down. George breaks the goon’s nose, rescues Jefferson from a kidnapping, gets the police off his back, and sends him on to Paris, where a new guy follows him, loiters outside his hotel and then chases him through the streets – until George mysteriously shows up in Paris to render yet more assistance.

Not that Jefferson is entirely inept. He was a track star in college, and he can really run. But more important, he’s smart as Hell and has already made serious progress in figuring out where this whole dangerous case of mistaken identity came from and where it’s ultimately headed. At first, it was to get an “egg” back from him – an egg he knows nothing about. But eventually, it’s about killing him to keep him quiet.

Also like other Josh Lanyon plots, it’s sort of an intellectual take on “The Perils of Pauline” - but with a gay man, a potential love story and a colorful travelogue underlying this dangerous, and sometimes hilarious, tale of crime and terror.

The author uses a most unusual device to plot the journey, “Esquire’s Europe in Style, 1960”. It’s the guidebook his father used on his European Tour, more than 50 years ago. It’s a breezy, thoroughly out-of-date, guidebook to the Europe of 1960, which adds a great deal of levity to Jefferson’s travels and our perceptions of England, Paris and Rome. It’s a charming conceit.

Ms. Lanyon also supplies a host of red herrings to misdirect the reader up until the very last moment. And though the final mystery isn’t exactly challenging, it’s huge fun to watch it unwind.

One of the great delights of this book is watching Jefferson’s coming of age – his decision to finally cut the apron strings, come out, and do what he wants, not what his parents expect. After all, there will be no George in his future unless he finally becomes his own man. It’s truly moving to watch Ms. Lanyon’s masterful and subtle writing slowly reveal the protagonist becoming more confident and capable, growing through his trials, right before your eyes.

Here’s hoping there will be more to follow. We’re all due for a new Josh Lanyon series, with her lovable (though sometimes oblivious) protagonists, their infinitely more worldly lovers (cops, spies, etc.), and her gentle and authentic prose. The characters are nothing less than charming, the challenges daunting - and more than a little dangerous, the plot propelled by tons of action, and a happy ending to make your day.

Josh Lanyon is back, in fine form, with more of what made us fall in love with her superb writing in the first place. Don’t miss Jefferson Blythe, Esq.

Classic Lanyon
By Michael Holland
Can you ever truly make up for hurting someone you love? That’s what Jefferson Blythe is about to find out, although he doesn’t know it when he lands in London for a modern version of the grand tour. The trip is ostensibly to help Jefferson get over being dumped by his girlfriend, and the plan is to retrace the steps of his grandfather, right down to using an outdated copy of Esquire’s Europe in Style as a guide.

Things don’t at all as planned for Jefferson. Right from the moment he lands, he’s dogged by a woman who seems to have mistaken him for someone else. When things start to unravel, Jefferson calls George, his neighbor from childhood who was like a big brother, until Jefferson screwed things up. George comes to Jefferson’s rescue, more than once, but rekindling their friendship, or more, proves elusive for the harried young man.

“Jefferson Blythe, Esquire” is fairly classic Lanyon. At its center is a mystery that isn’t easily unraveled, by the characters or the reader. In addition there are a number of quirky secondary characters that provide a lot of comic relief, in between murders. Jefferson Blythe is a standard Lanyon hero. He’s no super-sleuth. He stumbles into the mystery and spends most of the book bumbling his way through it. George seems like an unlikely, and sometimes unlikeable, love interest, but that’s also a common Lanyon touch.

Having so many familiar archetypes doesn’t necessarily detract from the story. It’s probably why the story seems so complete at less than 200 print pages. It’s a pleasant read that will divert you for a little while.

Elements: A Visual Exploration of Every Known Atom in the Universe, by Theodore Gray

The Elements has become an international sensation, with over one million copies in-print worldwide.

An eye-opening, original collection of gorgeous, never-before-seen photographic representations of the 118 elements in the periodic table.

The elements are what we, and everything around us, are made of. But how many elements has anyone actually seen in pure, uncombined form? The Elements provides this rare opportunity. Based on seven years of research and photography, the pictures in this book make up the most complete, and visually arresting, representation available to the naked eye of every atom in the universe. Organized in order of appearance on the periodic table, each element is represented by a spread that includes a stunning, full-page, full-color photograph that most closely represents it in its purest form. For example, at -183?C, oxygen turns from a colorless gas to a beautiful pale blue liquid.

Also included are fascinating facts, figures, and stories of the elements as well as data on the properties of each, including atomic weight, density, melting and boiling point, valence, electronegativity, and the year and location in which it was discovered. Several additional photographs show each element in slightly altered forms or as used in various practical ways. The element's position on the periodic table is pinpointed on a mini rendering of the table and an illustrated scale of the element's boiling and/or melting points appears on each page along with a density scale that runs along the bottom.

Packed with interesting information, this combination of solid science and stunning artistic photographs is the perfect gift book for every sentient creature in the universe.

Includes a tear-out poster of Theodore Gray's iconic Photographic Periodic Table!

From Booklist
Gray, an element collector and Popular Science columnist, has created a visual homage to the periodic table of the elements. The book begins with an introduction to the arrangement of the periodic table. The first 100 of the elements are each profiled on a two-page spread. The left-hand side of the spread features a large color image of the element in its true form, when possible. The right-hand side includes various images of ways the element appears in the world and explanations of some of the compounds in which it can be found. For example, the Selenium entry includes images of selenium sulfide medicated shampoo, Brazil nuts (which are high in selenium), and a red vase that gets its color from a selenium glaze. Most of the images are items from the authors personal collection. A column running down the right-hand page offers information on the elements location in the periodic table and its atomic weight, density, atomic radius, and crystal structure in addition to charts portraying its electron order filling, atomic emission spectrum, and states of matter at various temperatures. Because of their instability and short half-life, or because they have not yet been discovered, elements 101 through 118 are presented in two groups of nine. The volume concludes with a brief bibliography and an index in addition to a foldout poster of the periodic table. This eye-catching book is certain to appeal to students and casual browsers alike. --Maren Ostergard

Beautiful Book, Poor Binding on the softcover
By Lalibela
I absolutely love this book, but I made the mistake of buying the softcover instead of the hardcover. The book separated from the cover the second time I opened it, and now I read it gingerly for fear that more pages will separate. That said, the pages and photos are huge and breathtaking. It has been an engaging book for both the kids and adults in our house. It would be a beautiful coffee table book too. It is well worth the money, but splurge for the hardcover.

A must have for any home library
By Radar626
I purchased this along with the Molecules book, and both are well read in our home. The pictures are amazing - seeing these building blocks of everything around us is a great way to spend a lazy afternoon where you can take the time to just sit and stare at the pictures and shake your head and wonder where this book was many moons ago when I was in chemistry class. It's a joy to look through over and over, and the information the author provides only adds to the enjoyment.

Easy to pick up and learn about one (or many) elements, then continue reading at another time, since each element has only 2 well illustrated pages devoted to it. Pages include clear descriptions of each element, photos of different uses of the elements in every day products, as well as cautions.
The humor is well appreciated, too. A great book for curious people of all ages.

Darktown: A Novel, by Thomas Mullen

In the tradition of our most acclaimed suspense writers, the author of The Last Town on Earth delivers a riveting and elegant police procedural set in Atlanta, a ripped-from-the-headlines depiction of a world on the cusp of great change involving race relations, city politics, and police corruption.

Responding to pressure from on high, the Atlanta Police Department is forced to hire its first black officers. It's a victory of sorts, though the newly minted policemen are met with deep hostility by their white peers, and their authority is limited: They can't arrest a suspect unless a white officer is present; they can't drive squad cars; they can't even enter the station through the front door.

When a black woman who was last seen in a car driven by a white man with connections to the APD turns up fatally beaten, no one seems to care except for Lucius and Boggs, two black cops from vastly different backgrounds, who risk their jobs, the trust the community has put in them, and even their own safety to investigate her death. When their efforts stall, they have to work alongside fellow officers who include the old-school cop Dunlow and his partner, Rakestraw, a young progressive who may or may not be willing to make allies across color lines.

Set in the postwar, pre-civil rights South, and evoking the socially resonant and morally complex crime novels of Dennis Lehane, George Pelecanos, and Walter Mosley, Darktown is a vivid, smart, intricately plotted crime saga that explores the issues of race, law enforcement, and the uneven scales of justice.

A Difficult Portrait of Race Relations
By Gardener
This very well written book is difficult to read objectively. The story takes place in 1948 when I was four years of age. I grew up in the south, only 100 miles west of Atlanta and I experienced many of the Jim Crow attitudes that the black policemen in the book went through. A word of caution to the potential reader: if seeing n***** in print offends you, think very carefully about reading this book.

Much of the story takes place on or near Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. On many occasions the author refers to this street as "Sweet Auburn", but he does not explain the reference. Auburn Avenue was the street on which many of the black intelligentsia lived. These people were familiar with English literature and poetry. In 1770, Oliver Goldsmith published a poem, "The Deserted Village", and the first line of the poem is, "Sweet Auburn, loveliest village of the plain". From this, the residents of Auburn Avenue began to refer to their street as "Sweet Auburn".

Unfortunately, after almost 70 years since the setting of this story, race relations have not improved in America all that much. I hope that this book and books like it will be a catalyst for the end of Jim Crow attitudes - not just in the south, but in the entire United States.

Grim times
By J. Grattan
Set in the late 1940s in the still dormant, old-ways Southern city, Atlanta, GA, this book is a penetrating, at times excruciating, examination of race relations in that era and the vigilante-like efforts of the white police force to suppress blacks, all the while often engaging in all manner of criminal activities. Atlanta, from some minimal do-gooder instinct, has just hired eight black policemen, all WWII vets, to patrol black neighborhoods. Of course, the prejudice remains: they cannot enter the main police station, cannot drive a patrol car, cannot make an arrest, cannot investigate a crime, cannot wear the uniform outside exact hours of the shift, etc. And the entire police force is overtly hostile towards them. That is the environment in which new officers Lucius Boggs and Tommy Smith must operate.

When they observe a middle-aged white man hit a utility pole, in so-called “darktown,” furthermore with a black girl as a passenger who seems to have been assaulted, all they can do is call in a white team. As happens all too often, they can do nothing when the man is allowed to go free and the female flees from the car. Days later when the girl is found shot dead and hidden in a garbage heap, Boggs and Smith make it their mission find justice for her. The hurdles and dangers that they face as they dig up information while attempting to fly under the radar would deter most anyone. The run afoul of an underground, ex-cop dirty works group. When their quest takes them outside of Atlanta, matters become even more harrowing.

It’s an okay mystery, but it’s even better sociology. There are any number of episodes, some incidental, that the author touches upon that make startling clear the immense difficulty of being black in a racist society. The author is not on soap-box – he doesn’t have to be.

Interesting history with predictable mystery
By Tad Ottman
Darktown is an interesting look back on a troubling time in America. Set in post WWII Atlanta, it focuses on two of the eight rookie black cops who were hired. While on patrol, they stumble onto a drunk middle aged white man in a car with a young black woman. The man turns out to be former Atlanta PD and the woman turns up murdered a couple of days later. What follows is both a mystery and an historical commentary on a particularly difficult time.

The mystery holds few surprises. The police department is more interested in finding someone to accuse of the murder than solving it. The young black cops, Boggs and Smith, pursue it even though they lack the authority to conduct investigations. They are eventually assisted by a young white officer, Rakestraw, who is partnered with a racist cop, Dunlow. Rakestraw is interested in justice, but he is not exactly a crusader for racial equality.

While the mystery is fairly standard, the historical look at Atlanta is a little more interesting. The progress made in even hiring black officers is clouded by political motives and racism that is both deeply entrenched and institutionalized. The actions described in the book are horrific both to read, or in the case of the audiobook, listen to. The story may have been a little more successful with characters that were a little more sympathetic or less stereotypical. Nevertheless, the pressure that was in place both within and outside of the black community on the success of the experiment of hiring black officers kept the stakes high. Even the day to day obstacles both to doing their jobs and living their lives was illuminating.

The mystery is eventually solved, and justice of a sort is dispensed. What was lacking, was any sort of indication of what a path forward might be. A deeply racist south was portrayed, but there was no real sign that there was a way for anything to really change. The hiring of black officers in and of itself was portrayed more as a political expediency than as a step towards progress.

The audiobook was narrated by Andre Holland who did an outstanding job with the characters. Holland made you feel like you were in 1948 Atlanta and effectively conveyed the frustration, anger and weariness of the characters. The pace was steady and the mood tense.

I was fortunate to receive an advance copy of this audiobook.

Obsessively covers the 6502
By Bert Whetstone
This book is very thorough - almost alarmingly thorough. You'll certainly learn all you would ever want to know about the 6502. Not only does it cover the instruction set, this book also provides some useful code which is not specific to any one machine, and has some hardware projects too.

Hello 1979!
By Corie
I really enjoyed this book. I like assembly language and wanted to learn 6502 so I could make Atari games. I'm already familiar with MIPS assembly language so understanding this book was a breeze. If you are familiar with low level programming languages and want a good read this is a great book. On a side note in The Terminator there is a patch of 6502 programming in the terminator's view, so if you ever want to work for Skynet this is a must buy.

Good Intro to International Economics
By A Customer
I used this book for my international economics undergraduate course and found it easy to understand; it doesn't use lengthy mathematical formulas but utilizes basic macroeconomic theories. The authors organized this book well; the later chapters build upon the beginning ones. However, it would be best to have taken Intermediate Macroeconomics before using this book because the last few chapters rely heavily on a good understanding of intermediate level material.
