Really liked this book of poetry

I came upon Arun Maji's poetry on FaceBook, so I began following his page where he frequently posted poetry. Arun came out with a book of his poetry which I've just finished reading. In my opinion, his poetry speaks to the heart and soul of women - come on ladies, let's all admit it - women enjoy being cherished and appreciated body and soul by men or our partners. And that is what his poetry says to me. It satisfies a longing that we all feel.
Not all of his poetry is for and about women. There are other poems in here that will touch a chord with anyone, men or women. Resilience, loss, parting, passion, motherhood, and more. I enjoyed all of them.

The book follows the years that it took for him to get out of the Army Draft; land a recording contract with Warner Bros. Records; record and perform his music while living in San Francisco of the 1960’s; explore higher consciousness with an indigenous village in remote Mexico and find the path he is still on today. Buried Treasures is his journey, but also the journey that each of us must travel to get from where we are to who we are destined to become in our lives. We all have this story in us and each individual’s version of this story is the classic hero's journey.

About the Author
Guru Singh – born 1945, is a third-generation yogi and master teacher of Kundalini Yoga, meditation, mantra and ‘humanology’. His ancestry studied in India with spiritual masters in the early 20th century and brought this passion for consciousness into his home as a young child. He teaches a practical path to an enlightened household and success in life using these ancient technologies that are completely applicable in today’s world. This brings fulfillment into this busy world and he does this teaching with his wife Guruperkarma Kaur. He is also a musician, composer, author, and minister of Sikh Dharma based in Los Angeles, Seattle and India. He met Yogi Bhajan (master of Kundalini) in January of 1969 (exactly at the end of this book) and has been teaching this science throughout the world since 1970. Stick with it.

I had trouble getting through the first part as his near death experience was very weird to me. However it was essential to the rest of his story. An amazing true story that was a valuable read for me. I have bought copies to give to friends. That is a strong endorsement from me!

Winner in the live, love and learn category

Buried Treasures is a wonderful book. I am not sure about the buried part, because I am finding treasures on every page. This book is a lightning fast read as it weaves two stories that highlight our human search for meaning and the discovery of signposts in unexpected places.

Guru Singh is a masterful writer and story teller. I just ordered a copy for my adult son, as I ponder the journey he is certainly on, as he finds his own purpose in life. There are at least five chapters that will cause your breathing to stop. Fortunately, we have Guru Singh's advice to focus on the breath.......and we can recenter.

This book is excellent on many levels. I recommend it it anyone who wants to know themselves more no matter what the challenges are. Guru Singh 's experiences are exciting, interesting, and even scarey at times. I could not put the book down.

Some good stuff but it could have been a thinner book

I've re-read this book and changed my opinion about it for the better, so I decided to edit my earlier not-so-positive review. There is some good info in this book about crossing the Atlantic and arriving at different destinations.
There's also a fair amount of chatty, tangiential small talk. In parts of the book, I found myself skimming paragraph after paragraph looking for a substantive point. The auther touches superficially on miscelaneous cruising and sailing subjects that are treated far better in many other well-known general books on cruising.
However, there is some decent detail on what to expect on various Atlantic cruising routes. So it's worth a read if you're contemplating a long cruise.

Exceptionally Clear Presentation of Meditation

1. The distinction between concentration and mindfulness as forms of practice has never in my reading experience been so clearly stated. (My meditation library is extensive and my practice is 7 years old.) 2. The stages of insight work -- also, the clearest presentation in my reading experience. Particularly helpful were the discussions on "visions" (p. 12) and pseudonirvana (p. 26). 3. Part IV: The Psychology of Meditation -- This is a gem. Ties in beautifully with _Emotional Intelligence_ (another Goleman treasure). The "altered states or altered traits" of consciousness discussion (pg. 172-5) is the best explanation of the "3rd foundation of mindfulness" I have seen. Summary: If you are interested in how your practice fits into the grand scheme of practices or looking for a menu to chose from, this is the book. If you want a clarification of the path at the center of all practices, no where else have I seen a better presentation.
This! ! is a seven star book as is _Emotional Intelligence_.

Scientific study of meditation

Good overall book of meditation. Goleman makes the distinction between the two major types of meditation: Concentration and Mindfulness. He also gives a pretty thorough description of the Visuddhimagga mind maps. He goes on to describe Hindu Bhaki, Jewish Kabblah, Christian Hesychasm, Sufism, TM, Ashtanga, Tantra and Kundalini Yoga, Tibetan Buddhism, Zen, Gurdjeiff and Krishnamurti

A Great Overview of Meditation Practices

In THE MEDITATIVE MIND: THE VARIETIES OF MEDITATIVE EXPERIENCE Daniel Goleman does an even more comprehensive job of covering his subject matter than William James did in his classic study of relgion,THE VARIETIES OF RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE. Goleman covers a wider range of experiences and -- given that psychology has come a long way since James'day -- provides a more detailed analysis. This book ranks with Aldous Huxley's THE PERENNIAL PHILOSOPHY as a modern classic on spiritual paths. He makes a good case for meditation as an ancient "psychotechnology" (my words, not his) for the transformation of consciousness. He cuts through the superficial differences in meditative practices, and points out what all of them share at the core: the retraining of attention.

Very informative and an excellent resource

Preacher, teacher, and Christian author Adam Houge seems to have done it again in terms of writing a work that is highly informative and filled with tremendous wisdom. In this book the readers will walk away with tools enabling them to hear the voice of God, develop a deeper relationship with the Lord, and embrace a journey of purpose with God's stamp of approval. I will venture to say that countless individuals have desired to hear the voice of God, yet not understand the dynamics involved.

Adam Houge understands and conveys the importance of reading the Word, prayer, worship, and setting quiet time to hear God speak. Because He speaks in the still small voice, the daily habits of quiet time, he believes, can sharpen our ability to come to recognize His leadings. This book is totally awesome! I learned so much from this book

This book is totally awesome! I learned so much from this book. The author makes it so plain as to what and how we can hear God's voice. I am planning to do a group study sometime next year using this book.

Everything Mr. Houge has to say is backed up with Scripture. There is no guessing as to if it is true or not. If you believe that the Bible is the written word of God, then you will not have any problems taking to heart what the author has to say.

I strongly recommend this book to any and everyone who is looking for a closer walk with God.
