Bailout Nation, with New Post-Crisis Update: How Greed and Easy Money Corrupted Wall Street and Shook the World Economy, by Barry Ritholtz

An engaging look at what led to the financial turmoil we now find ourselves in

Bailout Nation offers one of the clearest looks at the financial lenders, regulators, and politicians responsible for the financial crisis of 2008. Written by Barry Ritholtz, one of today's most popular economic bloggers and a well-established industry pundit, this book skillfully explores how the United States evolved from a rugged independent nation to a soft Bailout Nation-where financial firms are allowed to self-regulate in good times, but are bailed out by taxpayers in bad times.

Entertaining and informative, this book clearly shows you how years of trying to control the economy with easy money has finally caught up with the federal government and how its practice of repeatedly rescuing Wall Street has come back to bite them.

  • The definitive book on the financial crisis of 2008
  • Names the culprits responsible for this tragedy-from financial regulators to politicians
  • Shows how each bailout throughout modern history has impacted what happened in the future
  • Examines why the consumer/taxpayer is left suffering in an economy of bubbles, bailouts, and possible inflation
  • Ritholtz operates a hugely popular blog, www.ritholtz.com/blog

Scathing, but fair, Bailout Nation is a voice of reason in these uncertain economic times.

Review
"Best books to make sense of financial crisis of 2009" (USA Today)

"Best business books of 2009" (Miami Herald)

"Investment Book of the Year" (Stock Trader’s Almanac)

"Succeeds in laying out all that transpired in easy-to-understand language. If you want to know how we got into this mess and what might still be coming, this is the book for you." (Wall Street Journal)

"The author writes with the fury of an insider mortified by the behavior of his heretical peers . . . There is much to be said for the book’s irreverence. Mr. Ritholtz has written an important book about a complicated subject, and yet you could still read it at the beach. Here’s hoping that some policy makers in Washington take it with them on vacation this month." (New York Times)

"Ritholtz makes a valuable new contribution to our understanding of how we arrived at this sorry juncture. He’s smart, sassy and often amusing. If you’re looking for an all-in-one place explanation of what went wrong and why, this is the book for you (or your confused neighbor)." (Bloomberg)

"Bailout Nation’s straightforward, compelling account puts the crisis in context, explains why the US government responded so stupidly, offers solutions, and advises how to prevent a repeat. Ritholtz’s indictment of the financial and political establishment is devastatingly accurate." (Asia Times)

"Before the housing and credit bubbles popped, Barry Ritholtz, a lawyer turned blogger and money manager, was one of the voices crying in the wilderness. His caustic (and occasionally profane) blog, The Big Picture, dissected macroeconomic news and relentlessly cut through spin. His book takes a long view of the roots of the economic crisis, tracing the history of a series of ever more expensive taxpayer-funded bailouts of failed industries." (Newsweek)

"Ritholtz’s book seeks to explain how the United States, once so proud, became "a nanny state for well-paid bankers. Ritholtz may be just the right person to explain the transition to both the disillusioned amateur and the finance junkie. He doesn’t pull his punches or bury the truth in layers of finance-speak, caveats, and disclaimers. Since he began blogging seven years ago, in-the-know readers of his popular blog, The Big Picture, have turned to Ritholtz for his prescient, refreshingly honest commentary on the economy. Anyone interested in understanding the roots of our current crisis should check out the book.." (Freakonomics)

"A comprehensive crisis scrapbook compiled by the money manager behind the popular financial blog the Big Picture in a quippy, no-nonsense voice..." (New York Magazine)

"These are some of the provocative and even dangerous questions that Barry Ritholtz takes on in Bailout Nation…Above all, Bailout Nation is about the socialization of risk and the privatization of profits." (Forbes)

From the Inside Flap
"Do you find yourself wondering: How did we get here? How did the United States of America get into such a predicament whereby in one year, 2008, the financial system nearly vaporized, the stock market crashed, real estate tanked, and major corporations were being bailed out. . . .How did our great country, a bastion of capitalism, devolve into a Bailout Nation where the gains were privatized, but the losses were socialized?"
—From the Foreword by Bill Fleckenstein

In Bailout Nation, Barry Ritholtz, author of the popular finance blog www.ritholtz.com/blog/, deftly mixes financial history with an insider's knowledge of modern finance to reveal how we've arrived at one of the worst economic crises ever. Engaging and informative, this book clearly shows how years of trying to control the economy with easy money has finally caught up with the United States and how the government's practice of repeatedly rescuing Wall Street—as well as other industries and organizations—has come back to bite them.

Divided into five compelling parts, this timely guide opens with a brief history of bailouts, detailing their particular patterns and unintended consequences. From here, it quickly moves on to reveal the events, individuals, and institutions that have shaped our current situation. You'll see how various government interventions—in individual companies such as Lockheed during the 1970s, in specific sectors such as banking in the early 1990s, and eventually, entire markets with the rescue of stocks in 2000—opened up a Pandora's Box. You'll also discover how the misguided philosophies of many players, from Fed Chairmen and Presidents to Senators and Treasury Secretaries, promoted the massive meltdown that has engulfed our global economy.

Ritholtz leaves no stone unturned, as he breaks down how the Federal Reserve's interest-rate targeting policies as well as a condition known as moral hazard—the belief that you won't bear the full consequences of your actions—perpetuated the reckless financial risk taking that has pushed us to the brink. Ritholtz also takes some of the biggest Wall Street firms—along with their enablers, the ratings agencies—to task. Page by page, you'll learn how the repeal of certain regulations allowed banks to merge into unruly financial behemoths, while unproven investment vehicles, including collateralized debt obligations (CDOs) and credit default swaps (CDSs), wreaked havoc on both the credit and housing markets.

The United States has abandoned its capitalist roots and become a Bailout Nation. The implications of this are significant and far-reaching. If you intend on navigating today's treacherous terrain, it would be wise to understand how we got here and what you need to get ahead. Scathing, but fair, Bailout Nation puts this financial debacle in perspective—through discussions of past miscues and an exploration of solutions being proposed-and offers a voice of reason during these uncertain economic times.

The Backstory to Bailout Nation
By Barry Ritholtz
Amazon Review

Long story short: After Bill Fleckenstein's GREENSPAN'S BUBBLES: THE AGE OF IGNORANCE AT THE FEDERAL RESERVE McGraw Hill asked him to do a follow up to that book. He (wisely) said no.

However, Bill suggested they contact me.

Which the publisher did. I turned them down (several times). Who had time to write a book? Besides, I did not want to do a fast rush-to-judgment type of thing. But they were tenacious in their pursuit, and I eventually succumbed to their flattery -- but on my terms, including having final edit on the manuscript. (This becomes important later on, as you will soon see).

Because of the way events played out, I ended up writing three separate Bailout Nation books over the next 15 months. The first version was a history of bailouts. This overview covered an arc from Lockheed (1971) to Bear Stearns (March 2008). Around the time this book was due (~Labor Day 2008), something was in the air . . . you could smell the leading edge of the approaching storm. I convinced the publisher to hold off a few weeks.

Boom! Fannie Mae blew up. Then Freddie Mac, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Citigroup, Bank of America. Soon Merrill was on the ropes, followed by Morgan Stanley, Goldman Sachs, GM and GE. All hell was breaking loose. Well, I thought, at least I had an ending. The expanded version of the manuscript, with greater emphasis on the latter part of 2008, was finished in December '08.

Or so I thought.

After I handed the book into the publisher (McGraw Hill), they let me know they had problems with my assessment of the Ratings Agencies. They were unhappy with my calling them "Pimps & Hos", or describing their business model of rating junk bonds as AAA for big fees as "Payola." (What would you call it?)

Not coincidentally, McGraw Hill owns of the largest Rating Agencies, Standard & Poor's.

The compromise was to remove the reference to Pimps, but using publicly available data and congressional testimony, to add more detailed analysis and quotations from experts. When it was finished, I found the revised section to be much more even handed -- and far more devastating -- to S&P. They (along with fellow rating agencies Moody's and Fitch's) were key enablers to the entire crisis. There were many other guilty parties, but I simply could not under-emphasize the ratings agencies.

When McGH rejected it again, I exercised my right to buy the manuscript back from them in January 2009. Numerous publishers were interested, but I went with Wiley -- they have a great deal of experience publishing business/investing related books, and as a publisher, had no conflicts of interest that would interfere with telling the full story.

The third version was the charm.

By this time, the amount of bailout money going to mismanaged companies, reckless speculators, and incompetent corporate executives had skyrocketed to 14 trillion dollars. This was infuriating to anyone paying attention.

Astonishing things happened as the book progresses. The more I researched and wrote, the more it was apparent we were witnessing the greatest heist ever made. By the last section of the book, history's biggest transfer of wealth -- from the taxpayer to the Banksters -- was taking place. Trillions were being shifted from the responsible to the reckless, from the prudent to the incompetent. It was infuriating -- and you will see as the book progresses my initial academic tone gets replaced with greater snark and anger.

I not only had my ending, I had a new cause -- exposing those who caused this mess, be they Democrat or Republican, Corporate CEO or derivatives trader. I hope the end result is something that will inform and illuminate, while entertaining you along the way . . .

The United States of Bailouts
By Alex Zhilyakov
Mr Ritholtz does an excellent job drawing a trendline from the first bailout in 70's to the latest bailouts of 2009. He illustrates how our own government cheer-led us into the Next Great Depression.

What makes this book different from books of other numerous authors?

* The book is written in a plain language an average person can understand
* The book is well-structured and sticks to historical events which led us into the mess
* For all government bailouts, Mr Ritholtz brings focus to their long-term effects rather than short-term ones
* Mr Ritholtz does not try to predict future or give investment advice (thank you)
* Illustrations are hilariously funny

I enjoyed every page, it is very well worth time and money.

An easy explanation for a complicated subject...
By R. Bohrer
It has been said that 'if you can't explain something in simple terms that anyone can understand, you don't understand it well enough yourself.' From the standpoint of that axiom, it is clear that Barry Ritholtz understands well the causes of the Great Financial Crisis of 2008. In plain terms, Ritholtz explains not only what directly led to the Crisis, but the events of the last 30 years which laid the groundwork of moral hazard which allowed the Crisis to occur as it did. Indeed, the events of the last two years were the result of a confluence of things gone wrong, and all sides of the political aisle are culpable, which Ritholtz makes clear in Bailout Nation.

If you are looking for a clear, concise, bias-free explanation in layman's terms of the Financial Crisis and, most importantly, the myriad events which led up to it, then you should read this book. Actually, I think that EVERYONE should read this book, because if the warnings implicit in the book are not heeded very soon, the US will find itself in a situation that will be impossible to recover from intact. Indeed, we may already be there...

Introducing Mathematics: A Graphic Guide (Introducing...), by Ziauddin Sardar, Jerry Ravetz

What is mathematics, and why is it such a mystery to so many people? Mathematics is the greatest creation of human intelligence. It affects us all. We depend on it in our daily lives, and yet many of the tools of mathematics, such as geometry, algebra and trigonometry, are descended from ancient or non-Western civilizations.

Introducing Mathematics traces the story of mathematics from the ancient world to modern times, describing the great discoveries and providing an accessible introduction to such topics as number-systems, geometry and algebra, the calculus, the theory of the infinite, statistical reasoning and chaos theory. It shows how the history of mathematics has seen progress and paradox go hand in hand - and how this is still happening today.

Ethnomathematica and the universal language of maths as the tool of science
By OverTheMoon
This book doesn't tutor you in mathematics so if that is what you want then go elsewhere now.

If you are looking to learn mathematics without a good cause then I would say that you better have the attention span to learn something absolutely mundane if you don't have a reason for it. A reason to learn mathematics is as vital to grasping mathematics as our brain needing a spinal cord to work. It would be best to begin with a cause to learn it and unfortunately just needing to know it for exams doesn't help matters either. I would suggest therefore that you turn to other books in this series like "Introducing Newton and classical physics" and "Introducing the Universe". "Introducing Quantum Theory" and "Introducing Relativity" are the big two science books that can be understood somewhat rudimentary outside of the developed mathematics to support it. I think trying to understand those topics provides enough motives to complete a full study and application of the language of mathematics. Then this book becomes an engrossing essential.

Mathematics is not hard if learned the correct way. Mathematics is easy if you spend the right amount of time (lifetime really but in a truly applied year you will have advanced dramatically) on it and know what to learn and in what order. Buy a calculator. Read and learn the manual. In the manual you will come across terminology that you would like to comprehend. This book lays it all out for you.

"Introducing Mathematics" explains the historical record for mathematics and its development. By the end of the journey you would have an overview that maps mathematics. Then you should go about learning about each part in other specialized books. The main maths to learn after this one are algebra, geometry, trigonometry, analytical mathematics and then the big calculus. Getting to calculus is what it is all about. There are then various laws and rules and applications like statistics after that but the goal here is a slow progressive study of the above maths topics before moving into calculus. This is what it is all about.

Core material:

Overall this is exactly the kind of book I wanted to read. A starter book that just covers all the stuff you need to learn for calculus. Some of the topics are explained harshly but study them enough and you will come around to appreciating the time spent for just getting the point the book makes. When it clicks the feeling is great. Enjoy mathematics.

Pomobabble and Cartoons
By M_A_S
This book briefly touches on many areas of maths, some old and some new, often uses the passive voice in regards to historically significant theorems in math without reference to the fuller context or reasons why they were deemed significant or who proved them and how. Being an "introducing" of course the book is limited in its scope and can only scratch the surface for most of its topics, of which it does an Ok job with.

But the bigger bone I have to pick is with the cultural studies stuff towards the end. Mathematics IS a cultural activity, and is what it is today, not stricly because of Eurocentric hegemony and cultural domination with value-laden theorems, but because mathematical ideas and approaches to proof are "traded" amongst cultures in a broader and larger Marketplace of Ideas.

Some recent books challenging Platonism (Where Mathematics Comes From, The Mathematical Experience) are better constructed with more limited theses.

Great little reminder to pique the interest
By Ryan B Woodsmall
This is a highly readable and nicely-, humorously-illustrated quick intro to maths of all sorts. Moving on from fundamentals, like bases and counting, the reader is provided with a number of jumping off points for further study; it's of course more about breadth than depth in a book like this, but the concepts are so clearly presented you can easily find what you're looking for.

The only things I can pick out as lacking are some of the more fundamental portions of the trigonometry section - more meat instead of presenting a glut of formulas would have been helpful - and a near complete avoidance of matrices, though groups and sets are both included. Given the type of person I'd think would be reading a book like this, the lack of matrix theory and linear algebra seems like an oversight considering their modern use in technology.

A section on calculus with a clear, real-world example of first and second derivatives and integrals was refreshing though, and brought back memories of math I'd not thought about in years. That's the sign of good presentation by authors who know their subject matter inside and out. I'd recommend it based on the calculus section alone.

Overall, I'd say this is worth a read if you're at all interested in the fundamentals of mathematics. It's quick, too, and can be read in a sitting. Be forewarned, though: some subject in here will probably hook you and you'll likely want to read more.

Researcher, thought leader, and New York Times bestselling author Bren Brown offers a liberating study on the importance of our imperfections—both to our relationships and to our own sense of self

The quest for perfection is exhausting and unrelenting. There is a constant barrage of social expectations that teach us that being imperfect is synonymous with being inadequate. Everywhere we turn, there are messages that tell us who, what and how we’re supposed to be. So, we learn to hide our struggles and protect ourselves from shame, judgment, criticism and blame by seeking safety in pretending and perfection.

Dr. Bren Brown, Ph.D., LMSW, is the leading authority on the power of vulnerability, and has inspired thousands through her top-selling books Daring Greatly, Rising Strong, andThe Gifts of Imperfection, her wildly popular TEDx talks, and a PBS special. Based on seven years of her ground-breaking research and hundreds of interviews, I Thought It Was Just Me shines a long-overdue light on an important truth: Our imperfections are what connect us to each other and to our humanity. Our vulnerabilities are not weaknesses; they are powerful reminders to keep our hearts and minds open to the reality that we’re all in this together.

Dr. Brown writes, “We need our lives back. It’s time to reclaim the gifts of imperfection—the courage to be real, the compassion we need to love ourselves and others, and the connection that gives true purpose and meaning to life. These are the gifts that bring love, laughter, gratitude, empathy and joy into our lives.”

From Publishers Weekly
University of Houston researcher and social worker Brown believes shame underlies the spread of depression, anxiety, eating disorders and much more, and drawing on a study of hundreds of women, she constructs a method for overcoming it. Brown defines shame as "the intensely painful feeling or experience of believing we are flawed and therefore unworthy of acceptance and belonging" and believes its spread has been created by conflicting and competing expectations about who women should be. Women feel shame about their appearance, about motherhood, family, money/work, health, stereotypes and trauma. Brown quotes liberally from the women she has studied and, most enlighteningly, gives examples from her own experiences juggling motherhood, career and her social life. These revelations underscore her belief in the importance of exposing shame and, through empathy, helping oneself and others move past it. She underscores the need to practice critical awareness, i.e., understanding the social forces that create shame in us can help us fight the sense of shame. Thus, Brown presents a spirited attack on the media and the beauty industry for presenting unrealistic images of women. Directing readers to focus on personal growth as opposed to unattainable perfection, Brown urges them to practice shame-resilience skills and teach them to their children. (Feb.)

From Booklist
Interviewing hundreds of women over six years, Brown was constantly faced with the shame just talking about shame induced. She explores how and why this universal human emotion is particularly present in women and how it affects behavior and relationships. She relates women's stories of shame about everything from obsession over appearance to sexual abuse, abuse of alcohol and drugs, and inadequacies as mothers, wives, and lovers. Brown offers insights and strategies for understanding shame and overcoming its power over women. She begins by defining shame and differentiating it from other emotions, and explores how shame is used and induced in the broader culture. She then identifies four elements of resilience: recognizing shame triggers, critical awareness, reaching out for help and connection with others, and speaking out about shame. She advises women on practicing courage, compassion, and connection to overcome cultures of fear, blame, and disconnection. An interesting look at a debilitating emotion that stunts the potential of too many women. Vanessa Bush

Review
“Brown offers insights and strategies for understanding shame and overcoming its power over women… An interesting look at a debilitating emotion that stunts the potential of too many women.”

—Booklist

“Brown is clearly passionate and knowledgeable about her subject and has a smooth writing style.”

—Library Journal

“Shame is a profoundly debilitating emotion. It drives our fears of not being good enough. We can learn to feel shame about anything that is real about us --- our shape, our accent, our financial situation, our wrinkles, our size, our illness, or how we spend our day. I Thought It Was Just Me is an urgent and compelling invitation to examine our struggles with shame and to learn valuable tools to become our best, most authentic selves. Grounded in exceptional scholarship and filled with inspiring stories, this is one of those rare books that has the potential to turn lives around.”

—Harriet Lerner, Ph.D. author of The Dance of Anger

“Bren Brown has written an insightful and informative study of a subject that leaves many women feeling trapped and powerless. Her analysis of how women are often caught in shame, is in itself liberating, and her thoughtful suggestions will help readers continue to free themselves from emotional debilitation in ways they may not even realize are possible. I Thought It Was Just Me can be a doorway to freedom and self-esteem for many, many readers.”

—Martha Beck, Ph.D., columnist, O, The Oprah Magazine, and author of Finding Your Own Northstar

"Bren Brown’s ability to explore shame and resilience with humor, vulnerability and honesty is both uplifting and liberating. If we want to change our lives, our relationships or even the world, we must start by understanding and overcoming the shame that keeps us silent. This important and hopeful book offers a bold new perspective on the power of telling our stories."

—Professor Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace Prize Recipient; Campaign Ambassador, International Campaign to Ban Landmines

"This is an important and inspiring book that offers understanding and validation to the painful feelings that come with the beliefs that we are not good enough or we should be different than who we are. Bren Brown walks us on a path that releases the shackles of inadequacy and leads us to embracing our authentic selves."

—Claudia Black, Ph.D. author of It Will Never Happen To Me

Everyone should read this book. Understanding shame and how it effects everyone at so many levels has been eye opening. Learning how to be resilient to shame and learning how to speak about shame has been very impactful. I have also come to understand how to be more empathetic towards others and what it really means empathize, really listening and feeling the many emotions shame brings.

Excellent for women; wished for more insights on men and shame
By J. Zielinski
This book, for me, was like how it is in college when you take your first class in psych and suddenly you see psychosis everywhere. I see shame and shaming everywhere now - in how people comment on the internet, talk about politics, treat kids, work together, tell stories about themselves... It really does pervade everything.

This book didn't make me feel less alone. It did make me realize, though, that to have true empathy with someone you need to realize you aren't there to fix or better them. You're there to listen, and hear what they are ashamed of, and help them with that. And recognize the same feelings (for whatever reasons you have) in yourself.

But all of this - courage, compassion, connection - it's very hard in our anti-vulnerable, I'm better than you, I did everything on my own culture. It doesn't mean the work isn't worth it, though.

I would only have liked to hear more on her research on men. I think we think of men as in such power and control, so we don't afford them the vulnerability and anxieties we do with women. I can only imagine the shame men feel when jobless, single, different in any way than the norm - and how much they are encouraged to keep that inside.

Different. Buy this.
By by Heather
Upgraded my DISH package for March Madness and got the OWN channel and saw a commercial for Oprah's Super Soul Sunday interview with Brene Brown, which peaked my interest enough to make me tune in. Typically, I don't buy books Oprah recommends, only because I have found the ones I have read of hers to either be too philosophical for my taste or commericially written/trendy. And I would not have bought this one except when I watched that interviews with Brene Brown - I was very affected by what she was saying and how REAL she was. I was going to order her books even if the reviews were zero stars - based on that interview. I started with this, her first book, and it was what I needed right now and what I needed a hundred times in my life and it's absolutely a game changer for me. I have read The Dance of Anger by Harriet Lerner and I thought that was super powerful - and when I got these books, it was a bonus to see Harriet Lerner raving about the book in its reviews. Much like Lerner's books - this one is timeless. Women in the 50's could have read this and felt the same way I do.
Brown states in the beginning that you are going to have feelings when you read this and you are going to be uncomfortable and that was very much the case for me. I keep a journal and I found that when I started reading this I started having all these emotions and feelings and things started taking on a whole new light and I have been journaling what seems like nonstop as I go along in this book. This is the sort of book that you are going to want to go slow through and you will find yourself having AHA moments, and rereading pages over and over again and if you are like me you are going to have to stop and take a breather and process what you are discovering about yourself. To be clear - it's not philosophical, it's not over your head, it's not like A New Earth. :) It's so real, and down.to.Earth that you will want to buy a copy for every person you know.
My favorite thing about Brene Brown in her interview was when she said that she didn't want to be a self-helper or a therapist for all her readers - but instead she just wanted to give us words and a vocabulary to better describe and understand what we are feeling. And she absolutely does that.

Review
The book will be very useful in high school American history, world history, and civics/government classes throughout the nation. Both teachers and students will be intrigued by the book's design and content. Exploring Political Ideas will be especially useful as a resource for teachers and students involved in the We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution program. The book will serve as an excellent supplement to the program by adding additional historical context, comparative examples, and the application of core ideas to specific issues in the United States and throughout the world. In addition, the book could be the basis for a standalone course that compliments We the People in a prior or subsequent semester. --Robert S. Leming, Director, Center for Civic Education

While the development of political philosophy, government, culture, institutions, and power in the first four (4) units could stand alone as an excellent reference on political theory, the inclusion of Units 5 8 makes Exploring Political Ideas an invaluable supplement in World History, American History, American Government and Comparative Government classes. I am impressed by the book's imaginative format and content, delighted by its assimilation of critical thinking and decision making skills, and eager to implement it as a supplement within the Social Studies Department of my school. --Rosie Hefferman, AP American Government and AP Comparative Government teacher

This work is a distinctive and impressive contribution to the education of citizens. It promotes inquiry about political ideas, which have influenced Americans and other peoples in their pursuit of peace and justice through good government. The authors raise the enduring questions of great political thinkers, and comparatively examine notable examples of alternative responses, from ancient to modern times. They trace the origins and development of concepts at the core of constitutional and representative government, and apply them to critical public issues of the past and present in the United States and abroad. This book provides intellectually stimulating encounters with political ideas that belong in the core curriculum of civic education. --John J. Patrick, Professor Emeritus of Education, Indiana University

"This book will definitely be an asset to my high school classroom, not only as a resource for AP Government and Politics, but for my World History courses as well.

High school students will surely benefit from the logical, straightforward explanation of complicated ideas, and enjoy the way the authors tackle the basic issues of society and government - how can we live together?

The "Reviewing and Using the Chapter" sections provide a good balance between questions designed to gauge understanding and opinion questions, designed to get the student to think more profoundly about what he/she has just read.

The authors have done a great job in combining some very complex and highbrow ideas into a format that high school students can relate to and probe more deeply."

- Susanna Gigerba, History & Government Teacher

"Imaginatively and colorfully packaged, the book welcomes student involvement. Each of the eighteen chapters is introduced by a paragraph that clearly and succinctly identifies the chapter's purpose, immediately followed by a list of a dozen or so key "Terms to Know." Scattered throughout are beautiful pieces of art; ingenious, informative original figures and illustrations; and thoughtful editorial insertions that amplify key figures, events, and movements. A helpful list of web resources guides students and teachers to fruitful fields of new discoveries."

- John P. Kaminski, Director, The Center for the Study of the American Constitution

"This text is an invaluable reference for any government or history teacher. It is rich in concepts and filled with substantive information and pertinent examples that will make it clear to students how a variety of political ideas have been adopted in various political systems. Perhaps even more useful to teachers and students is that the political ideas...republicanism, rule of law, rights, and many others... which are the cornerstone of every high school textbook, are presented in a unique manner. The authors use several approaches to develop these ideas from their point of origin, through their implementation, and where we can see these ideas in our current political systems. More importantly, they challenge students to consider whether these ideas still matter today! This book belongs in the library or on the desk of teachers who are interested in engaging their students in relevant and thoughtful discussion."

Great Information
By Batul Valika
Likely a little too dense for just general residency, but still a great reference book for the general internist...great information for further endocrine training....well organized with the latest therapy recommendations

Great even for an "amateur" studier
By scientific mom
I first found this book at our local university medical library, then bought a copy for myself. I used it to study the possible causes of infertility. I'm not in the medical profession or a medical student (other than as a hobby) but this book was easy for me to comprehend.
