Highly recommended with or without T-Racks

If I did not have T-Racks I would still give this book a perfect score. There is great, concise, easily readable and well-organized value here. Assuming the reader's recording is DAW-based, this book is about the best I've seen in general info and instruction in the area, again, even if one doesn't have/use T-Racks.
Perhaps it's not for the easily-insulted, seasoned professional. But it should be great for anyone from "more-than-total-beginner" on up to pro precisely because of the choice of information provided (and omitted) and the layout. I am a former pro musician, with recording and live-sound experience and, even though I could say "I know" a lot of what is presented here, I'll humbly and honestly say that I'm thankful for and benefitted by this book. It is as though someone had taken the best, dog-eared articles from a huge stack of electronic recording magazines and put them into one concise and graspable resource. There may not be 1000 pages of random, overwhelming creativity insights, but if you absorb (or re-absorb) the principles in this book, you will operate from a fundamentally sound base from which creative "color" will either come naturally or could be sought in other tomes.
As to the "with or without T-Racks" comment: the book addresses the current t-racks "deluxe" model in which all components can be used as stand-alone inserts. Theses "components" are in turn software models of classic hardware devices. So the book is really discussing DAW mixing & mastering in the context of classic hardware audio principles. Other than stating he likes and uses T-Racks, the author does not appear to be "selling" the suite and that does not come off as the book's purpose at all (legitimate quality production and reader success does believably seem to be the goal). That said, authorizing this book may be among the best marketing decisions IK Multimedia has made, and I've got no problem with that. Based on this book, I just bought "Music 3.0" and will be looking for other titles by this author.

"Hands-On" approach to T-Racks

This book is great for a beginner/intermediate level user that wants to try out some mastering "in the box". I don't recommend this book to anyone that is not using T-Racks, however. There is not enough generic mastering information to warrant a purchase of this particular book if you do not own T-Racks. I would recommend Bobby's other book on mastering or if you are VERY serious about learning the art and science of mastering audio, I would recommend the book by Bob Katz which is a lot more detailed (sometimes to a fault, "yawn"). This book is a great overall handbook for T-Racks and has some great practical suggestions on how to use the processors to their fullest potential. It is laid out very neatly and has many pictures as well as sample settings for each module. My only complaint is that it is a bit short. I read it in less than two hours and was left wanting much more. The target audience seems to be aimed more towards the beginner and it more than meets any expectations from a novice. The only thing that I could think of that would amp it up would be to include a DVD that contains some real-world examples.

Great for anyone who's new to Mastering in T-Racks 3

This book is a great read if you are new to mastering, and more specifically, if you are new to mastering with T-Racks 3 Standard or Deluxe. It includes a lot of basic information and some helpful tips and tricks. The book also covers a lot of the same ground as the T-Racks 3 Deluxe User's Manual, so if you've already read the manual, you're in for a review.
However, there's a lot of additional information found here, such as default "starting point" settings for each of the T-Racks 3 modules, and extensive coverage of the Metering section, which is one of T-Racks most powerful features. You'll also learn about working with multiple files, various formats, dithering, using the Compare feature, loop-points, fades, and exporting your project. All-in-all, it's a worthwhile read if you're either a beginning or experienced user of T-Racks 3 Deluxe.
In addition to this book, I would also highly recommend "Mastering with T-Racks" instructional DVD-ROM by Michael Costa from Groove3, especially if you're a more hands-on learner.
