About the Author
Andreas J. K�stenberger (Ph.D., Trinity Evangelical Divinity School) is professor of New Testament at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in North Carolina. He is also coauthor of Salvation to the Ends of the Earth and author of the article "Mission" in IVP Academic's New Dictionary of Theology.

O'Brien is senior research fellow in New Testament at Moore Theological College in Sydney, Australia. He is well-known for his major biblical commentaries, including The Letter to the Ephesians (Apollos), and several publications on the subject of mission.

An Excellent Survey of Missions in the Bible

In Salvation to the Ends of the Earth, Andreas Kostenberger and Peter O'Brien have presented a systematic study of the subject of mission from Genesis to Revelation. After surveying the Old Testament and Second Temple Jewish literature in the early chapters, the authors conclude that there is no evidence for an organized Jewish mission to Gentiles, and that the Judaism of Jesus' day could not be classified as a missionary religion. While I am sympathetic to their presentation, I contend that Matthew 23:15 does indeed allude to a Pharisaic outreach to non-Jews, and must be regarded as an exception to the rule.

Beginning with Mark's gospel, the authors show that while Jesus was open to the entreaties of various non-Jewish people (Mark 7:24-30), it goes beyond the evidence to suggest that Jesus engaged in an active Gentile mission. Rather, a mission to the Gentiles is anticipated as a future reality in such texts as Mark 11:17 ("My house will be a house of prayer for all nations"), and in the cry of the Roman centurion in Mark 15:39.

In their survey of Matthew's gospel, the authors explain that the particularist statements of Matthew 10:6, 23 demonstrate God's faithfulness to His covenant community while the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20 envisions the worldwide impact of the gospel of Jesus Christ. They rightfully stress that Matthew 10:23; 24:14 and 28:16-20 teach that missionary work is the church's primary responsibility between the first and second comings of Christ.

Noting the universal scope of Luke's gospel of inclusion, Kostenberger and O'Brien stress that Luke-Acts may be the clearest presentation of the church's universal mission in the entire New Testament. They correctly identify the hints of the Gentile mission in Luke 2:32 and Luke 4:16-30, though they may be making too much of the sending of the seventy-two in Luke 10, a vague allusion to a future ministry to Gentiles at best.

The book also has an inspiring discussion of the book of Acts, noting that it chronicles the unstoppable word of God. Taking the words of Ben Witherington as their cue, they assert that neither persecution nor imprisonment nor legal obstacles can prevent the gospel of Jesus Christ from penetrating to the heart of the Roman empire.

The authors go on to note that from the time Paul was converted on the road to Damascus, he was completely devoted to the gospel of Christ. They highlight key texts such as Romans 1:5-6, where he testifies that he has received grace and apostleship to call people from among the Gentiles to the obedience that comes through faith. They also underscore passages such as Romans 15:14-33 gives an overview of his missionary career and his desire to preach Christ in regions where He is not known, and 1 Corinthians 9:19-23, where Paul states that he is willing to be or to become almost anything to win people for Christ. There also note that while Paul never commands that believers in Christ share their faith, he notes with approval in Philippians how many have preached the gospel. I would have also included a discussion of Philemon 6 where Paul explicitly prays that Philemon would be more active in sharing his faith.

The writers also recognize that there is a missionary thrust in the gospel of John, with Christ as the primary missionary, the One who is sent by the Father. Furthermore, they recognize that while the Johannine epistles and the General epistles do not have a strong evangelistic emphasis, they stress the purity of the gospel, which is absolutely foundational for a successful missionary enterprise.

I highly recommend this book and I consider it to be a very important biblical exposition on missions in the Bible.

comprehensive and well written

The topics in this book even at a glance will show u that the authors have a good grasp of the subject of missions as that which is central to the fulfilment of all mankind entering into God's rest via the redemptive work of Christ. It helps answer the question " is salvation to the gentiles a secondary thought of God or always has been a part of God's redemptive work even in the OT. It is systematic theology at its best and helps to affirm the new covenant as the covenant of all covenants. Written to the glory of the God, showing indeed that he is no respector of persons, and saves all kinds of men throughout the world so that not men from every part of the earth, together with the redeemed physical descendents of Abraham may share in the glory of his inheritance given in a seed form to Adam in the garden, to Abraham in the promise of the land, to Isreal and then consummated in the new heavens and earth (New Covenant).

one of the best...

Besides the big flop on saying the book of Jonah isn't missional (Jesus said it was, why don't they?), this is probably the best book out there on presenting a biblical theology of Missio Dei in the Bible you will find. The authors are in contrast to Walter Kaiser in that they do not believe Second Temple Judaism was a missionary religion. Judaism served to draw in the nations, not go out to the nations. That comes in the Acts of the Apostles. While in the OT the Jews were a light that drew the nations in for a closer look, in the NT, all believers are to go out as a light to the nations taking the salvation of the Lord to the ends of the earth.

For the work on John and Paul alone, this book is worth having. Whoever thinks John isn't missional needs to read again. The standard Paul set for missions still stands today.

If you want to round out your understanding of the Bible theologically, you should read this book.

As a user and teacher of ontological methods in medicine and engineering I have for years warned my students that the design of domain ontologies is a black art with no theoretical foundations and few practical principles. Robert Arp is a researcher and analyst for the U.S. Army at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, who has worked on ontologies for the U.S. Air Force and the National Institutes of Health. He is the author of Scenario Visualization: An Evolutionary Account of Creative Problem Solving. Barry Smith is SUNY Distinguished Professor of Philosophy at the University of Buffalo and Director of the National Center for Ontological Research. A superb monograph that collects material previously available only from journal articles and expository videos. Tremendously helpful on a project of mine. I had access to a version through a university library, but I purchased the Kindle edition here because the formatting is much better for an eReader. Like other "mathy" books, there were some issues with the Kindle display of figures and tables, but this wasn't severe enough to affect my ability to understand the material. The best single reference I am aware of for anyone interested in the BFO approach to computational ontologies.

About the Author
Mary B. Grosvenor, M.S., R.D. Mary Grosvenor received her B.A. degree in English from Georgetown University and her M.S. in Nutrition Sciences from the University of California at Davis. She is a registered dietitian with experience in public health, clinical nutrition, and nutrition research. She has published in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of nutrition and cancer and methods of assessing dietary intake. She has taught introductory nutrition at the community college level and currently lives with her family in a small town in Colorado. She is continuing her teaching and writing career and is till involved in nutrition research via the electronic superhighway.

Lori A. Smolin, Ph.D. Lori Smolin received her B.S. degree from Cornell University, where she studied human nutrition and food science. She received her doctorate from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. Her doctoral research focused on B Vitamins, homocysteine accumulation, and genetic defects in homocysteine metabolism. She complete postdoctoral training both at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where she studied human obesity, and at the University of California at San Diego, where she studied genetic defects in amino acid metabolism. She has published in these areas in peer-reviewed journals. Dr. Smolin is currently at the University of Connecticut, where she teaches both in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology. Courses she has taught include introductory nutrition, lifecycle nutrition, food preparation, nutritional biochemistry, and introductory biology.

The best summary of basic nutritional science I've seen

I picked this up at my local library, as I have with many health and nutrition books, but this is the first one that I am going to buy. Most nutrition books I see are full of either iffy science, too much biased opinion, or they're just too complicated for me to follow. This book gives a brief but thorough explanation of all the basics. The text and pictures are concise and easy to follow. I have very little scientific background and I was able to understand all the stuff about mono- di- and polysaccharides, amino acids, enzymes, and all the other molecular stuff and their practical functions in the body. If you're confused about our state of nutritional knowledge today then start here. I wish I'd had a book like this years ago.

Nietzsche called The Gay Science "the most personal of all my books." It was here that he first proclaimed the death of God -- to which a large part of the book is devoted -- and his doctrine of the eternal recurrence.
Walter Kaufmann's commentary, with its many quotations from previously untranslated letters, brings to life Nietzsche as a human being and illuminates his philosophy. The book contains some of Nietzsche's most sustained discussions of art and morality, knowledge and truth, the intellectual conscience and the origin of logic.
Most of the book was written just before Thus Spoke Zarathustra, the last part five years later, after Beyond Good and Evil. We encounter Zarathustra in these pages as well as many of Nietzsche's most interesting philosophical ideas and the largest collection of his own poetry that he himself ever published.
Walter Kaufmann's English versions of Nietzsche represent one of the major translation enterprises of our time. He is the first philosopher to have translated Nietzsche's major works, and never before has a single translator given us so much of Nietzsche.

Beware non-Kaufmann Kindle version

I love Amazon, but you have to be careful about the way very different versions of a book sometimes wind up on the same sales page with their reader reviews mixed together. At the time I am writing, the page for the Walter Kaufmann translation of the Gay Science lists a Kindle edition for 99 cents, but that edition is not the Kaufmann. It is a new version of Thomas Common's poor translation from a hundred years ago; without its slight re-editing, this public domain version is available free elsewhere. Although I do see one contrary opinion in the reviews, the vast majority of readers greatly prefer the Kaufmann translation, and until that is made available for Kindle, I would suggest one of the inexpensive used copies of the paperback, which you can also get on this page. _That_ is a five star book.

EDITED IN OCTOBER 2015: As of THIS date, you can get a Kindle version of the Kaufmann translation for 11.99. A bit pricey for a Kindle reissue, but still worth it (and it may come down sometimes). If you are not seeing that version on the page where you read this review, do another search in the Kindle department, just searching for "Kaufmann," nothing else, and you should find it; you may have to go through a few pages. Price and accessibility may change in the future, of course.

I rate this 1 star because the kindle version is messed up. It doesn't contain a coherent translation. It switches from English to German mid sentence. It's frustrating and unreadable. I want a refund...but I don't see that happening. Buy the physical book. It's correct.

Grateful to Kaufmann

Kaufmann's translation is the best I have found so far. He does a great justice to Niestzsche's poetry and style. Kaufmann saved Nietzsche from being misinterpreted and provided us with a fair amount of material which otherwise would have been impossible to digest or even access because Freddie is not the type of author who can be cited easily.

I love and read all of Freddie's work, but TGS is his summum bonum. It takes several re-reads to be able to grasp it, so if you are looking to get up and close with philosophy, this is it!!

simple perfection

Teaches concepts used in chess at both beginning and advanced levels and does it is way that is so simple to understand. I would describe it as a childrens book written for jr high or high school aged kids.
I bought it for my 7 year old kid and she might be a bit young to read it and understand some of the teachings. Also keep in mind this book was written in a time when political correctness didnt exist :) so my kid will be reading about the grossly fat queen and how she murders other pieces on the boad. Also how violent the game of chess is :). I had forgotten those parts myself but i turned out alright so i recon my kid will as well.

When I was 14 years old (I am now 50) I read this book and, at a time when I was miserable, depressed, doing very badly in school & was almost kicked out of school, it changed everything for me. I read this book, then started playing chess, and over the course of a couple months realized I could do something better than any of my friends, or almost anyone at my school, for that matter. In one year, my life turned around. I joined the chess club, played in a few tournaments, and managed to pull my grades up in the last three years of high school to the point where I managed to scrape my way into Cornell. That - after almost having been kicked out of high school three years earlier - was all due to getting into chess. And this book was responsible for that.

My favorite tactical chess book when I was growing up

A charming, oversized (literally) romp through chess tactics. The illustrations are clever and hilarious; alas, this book is out of print. The newer "Learn Chess Quick: How to Play the World's Greatest Board Game, and Win" is available, and fun...but this folio-sized book will always be special to me.

Not quite but getting there

It is a good story. Because it is I would have given it a 5 star reviews but for some elements that the story contained.

I will start with good stuff. The story had a good pace. I was never bored. I read it in one sitting. It as a forbidden element in that there is a romance is between a guardian hero and his late teenage ward.

Now for the not so good stuff. I thought that the story would include hot sexy times for two reasons. It is set up to have them because of the forbidden love aspect of the story and the author called herself a smut writer in her bio. Unfortunately the few love making scenes there were were duds. The hero and heroine do not make love sexually until near the end of the story and when they finally do it is more telling than showing and /or references to the fact that the did. At least though that meant that the hero do it with OW was referenced as opposed to shown. It is a turnoff for me when there are detailed sexual scenes with OW. Speaking about which I can handle references to being with OW if it is before the heroine and the hero get physical. However when they do he better keep it in his pants. The hero lost some of my respect and a star when he got physical with the heroine, rejected her before going all of the way and then in a selfish and thoughtless move had sex with a prostitute. The poor girl never even got to kiss someone else her entire life but he hires a prostitute to meet his needs after getting the heroine all sexually worked up. Not cool. Another thing that detracted from my enjoyment was at times the story was difficult to follow. It jumped from past to present too quickly and switching speakers a jarring way without proper transitions.

The book had 3306 locations on my kindle. The book was about a girl, named Misha and a man, named Mikhail. Misha was a talented young violinist, who had been abandoned by her mother, when she was a child. Mikhail, was an extremely dominant, Russian mob boss. He took Misha into his home, after she was attacked by some low life, while living on the streets. The book contained some minor sex play and actual sex, at the end of the book. I loved the Mikhail character. He was strong, over protective, fierce, and torn between doing what he wanted and what, he felt was best for Misha. Misha was very sweet, and desperately in love, with her hero, Mikhail. I loved the intimate connection and affection between Misha and Mikhail. I just wished there could have been a bit more action, overall the book, was a little too tame for my tastes. The book reminded me of a slightly spicy harlequin romance.

This was a great story of love that started so innocently and evolved ...

This book needed an epilogue. After all of the time spent building up to the change in the main characters relationship, an epilogue was a necessity. This was a great story of love that started so innocently and evolved over years. Misha was so sweet in her love for Mikhail. He was the perfect man for her. This author knows how to write a meaningful story without too much fluff. In many books I find myself skimming over parts where there is no conversation, but in this book I read every detail. The author kept me in anticipation of what would happen next. When Misha became aware of Mikhail's attraction to her, she became bolder and more confident in her plans to be the only woman in his life. This story was almost perfect. There were some editing issues at critical times when it was important to understand what was happening in the story. Overall wonderful read. I just wish there was more time spent with them as a couple instead of the book practically ending as soon as they got together. Mikhail found Misha when she was a homeless child left alone to fend for herself. He took her in, gave her a family, and a home. He remained distant with her throughout her childhood unsure of why he felt the need to take her in. I was unsure why the women in his life were so jealous of a child, but maybe they saw something that the readers where not aware of? In the end, Misha prevailed and found her permanent place in his life.
