Uncommon, Unusual, Thought provoking

"An uncommon devotional" is an accurate description of this book. It's creative and thought provoking. There are no blanks to fill in to prove the assignment is done . It's different every day. There is something from every book -- Old and New Testament. It need not be read in chronological order. Like the Psalms? Go to the Psalms. How about a thought on Amos? The scripture is written out, no need to have another book open. Time requirement? It depends on you. Hopefully you'll take time to meditate. It's rewarding. I'm buying more for friends. THANKS!

A Quality Devotional

I have thoroughly enjoyed this devotional book. Using the text of The Message, Eugene Peterson guides us through the Bible, using select texts and a technique that modern Scripture readers aren't too familiar with. I have been inspired, convicted and encouraged by the devotions in this book. While The Message is not my favorite translation, I applaud Mr. Peterson for this book. He worked hard and produced a very good tool for devotions.

Its an awesome devotional. It a daily thing but once your comitted and start really getting into it its gets really good. it is really short so it doesnt take up much of your time (i like to have them a bit longer) but other then that I really enjoy it.

These principles are demonstrated in twelve sets of pattern instructions for complete garments, presented in the economical Japanese way.

This is the book I was looking for!

I have been looking for a book that would help me refine my designs and write them in pattern form. This is not just a helpful book in that regard this is *that* book, the book that makes sense of all the little bits and pieces, fills in the gaps in my knowledge base and helps me understand what I'm doing with yarn.

Written and published in the UK in 1990 I feel this book is even now ahead of it's time. From the back "Contents include: the Japanese pattern format; exploring and mixing stitch patterns; bias knitting; pattern notation; the fitted sleeve shape and garment design; colour, design and the dropped shoulder line"

Kinder's writing style is impeccable, clear and conversational. She doesn't resort to terse knitting term and she doesn't gloss over the math or assume that her readers can't keep up with her. My eyes started to glaze over (just a tiny bit, out of habit) when she hit the "magic formula" but I turned the page and found that I really do understand it now. It's not a huge tome at 160 pages, but it's packed with information and I feel much more confident not only in my design abilities but in my ability to communicate my designs via a written (and charted!) pattern.

It arrived on time and is as advertised, but is somewhat sloppy in writing style with typos and space-holders that were clearly not supposed to make it through the editing process. The content is decent, but there's likely a better choice out there.

About the Author
Jack Kelly is both an accomplished novelist and an experienced author of popular history. He writes regularly for American Heritage, and has also written features about the DuPont family's involvement in the gunpowder industry and the history of fireworks in America. He lives in Milan, New York.

Great intro to history, science and technology

Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards, & Pyrotechnics: The History of the Explosive that Changed the World, by Jack Kelly, Basic Books, NY, 2004. Kelly had done a very nice job with this crisp, well written history of gunpowder. He covers the subject nicely, in survey fashion, but with some detailed stories. There's history, technology, and science-all in fine factual detail but for the general audience. The chemistry, mathematics, metallurgy, and physics are there, but not in rigorous detail. Just enough to whet the appetite for further study. References are included for each chapter, though footnotes are lacking.

A detailed study of the history of gunpowder and related technologies could have gone on for thousands of pages. The author has selected certain stories for focus. He begins in China, and tells especially the European story, and the use of firearms in battle, on land and at sea. He includes some stories from America including the Revolutionary War, the story of Samuel Colt, and the Dupont story of gunpowder. He ends with development of the A-bomb, but really coverage ends at the beginning of the Twentieth Century with smokeless powder. There is no mention of lead mining or the famous shot towers. Kelly covers the abundance of saltpeter in the warm climate of China, its general shortage in Europe, and the extensive efforts to collect and extract it in Britain and France. But there is no mention of the Nobel Prize winning Borne-Haber process, invented in World War I in Germany, that resolved the nitrate shortage by making synthetic nitric acid from air and fossil fuels (natural gas, naphtha, coal), as is still practiced today.

The book is highly readable and will be appreciated by those interested in history, science, and technology. Index.

A GOOD FLAWED NARRATIVE

Reading the other reviews here one would get the impression that Kelly is guilty of some serious flaws in his work. I would think that people like Noman OOOO (reviewer below) is actually guilty of some seriously flawed expectations. (I shall not deal with his expectations of history being amoral -- anyone who writes some rubbish like that has clearly not read any history -- as a quick glance of his book reviews proves: he seems adept on reviews of fantasy books! His moral observations are equally fantastic).

So let's deal with Kelly. He is not a serious student of Gunpowder. He is a narrative historian writing something that should be interesting and enlightening. This he accomplishes admirably. His style and the events he decides to focus upon are very largely wholely subjective. Obviously events like Crecy and the Fall of Constanstinople are pivotal, but other events he describes -- especially his rather American perspective on the importance of the American War of Independence and Civil War -- are wholly his own preference. However he held my interest very well during the whole narrative and I wholly enjoyed his very literate writing style.

It is also of note what Kelly leaves out: there is no description for the British Arms industry; Armstrong-Vickers almost certainly had a greater influence on the development of arms and gunpowder. And that also highlights another "flaw" of this book -- there is a confusion between it being a history of arms and a history of gunpowder.

But all in all what Kelly does write about his writes with flair, heightened tension and he is a very good stylist. I bought it for the airplane and I blitzed through it in about 6 hours. A good read. Is there any higher recommendation...?

The history of gun powder

Kelly starts with the invention of gun powder in China and goes through 1900. I found the book very enlightening, as well as a fun read. Kelly describes how powder was originally invented by Chinese alchemists, use by the Chinese to fight off the Mongols, adaptation by European powers, the parallel development of guns and cannons, and societal effects like ending the age of castles and spurring the development of chemistry. The chapter on the Duponts was interesting. Highly recommended.

A a reading specialist, I read this adapted version with two separate classes of freshman in a reading recovery program. The Lexile was just right and the story was as compelling as ever. Very effective as a "novel" for challenged readers.
