A good, wide-ranging primer

This short textbook gives a brief, balanced introduction to just about every aspect of political science.

I was drawn to this book partly because of the author's passionate opening assertion that "Throughout history the breakdown of political authority has taken a devastating toll in human suffering." I hoped that this strong point of view would be carried through the book and inform the author's explanations of the topics. While I can't exactly say that this was achieved, I can say that he does write from a strong conviction in the importance of politics in the widest sense, and with a sense that all the many aspects and subdisciplines of political science play important parts in this complex, sometimes ill-defined discipline.

The text is broken down into five parts, dealing respectively with the traditions of Western political thought, individual and group behavior, government institutions, international politics, and finally an examination of political science itself as a discipline. Each part consists of from two to five short chapters, which are in turn broken into subsections giving short descriptions of the important topics. With the possible exception of part 5 (since I am not a student of academic political science), I found Heineman's survey most relevant to helping my understanding of the political world.

To take one example, he covers a lot of ground in a short space as he describes the history of political thought and the thinking behind liberalism, Marxism, and conservatism. After a lifetime of reading newspapers and magazines, I felt for the first time that I was discovering what the core outlooks and ideas are behind the politics of the left and right, and why the various positions on the spectrum think as they do.

Heineman's writing style can be a little academic and wordy, and sometimes, in his zeal for balance, he gives the impression of trying almost too hard to see value in points of view that he clearly doesn't agree with (for example, postmodernism), but over all his interest in and respect for the discipline carries the day. Also, my copy, published in 1996, is a bit dated--although this is not important for a primer. The brevity of the individual subsections, which are almost like encyclopedia entries, also helps speed the reader along.

In sum, it is a wide, concise survey that lets you see the whole field in one text, so that you can decide which areas of the discipline you might want to examine further. At the very least, after reading this you should be able to get much more out of news stories.

Its okay but very outdated

It has everything you would expect for a basic book on Political Science. You get the basics of political theory, comparative politics, and US politics all in one small book. The problem is that it is very outdated. A lot of the information in this book could really use an update. In today's corrupt system of government where the ultra rich, unions, and multinational corporations run our government, this book's information seems like a really good look at the good old days of how government and US politics were supposed to work.

During the majority of that time, he was assigned to the FBI’s Cyber Crimes Task Force where he focused on Open Source Intelligence (OSINT), and various computer crime investigations. The (Third) edition of Michael Bazzell’s “Hiding from the Internet” should warm the hearts of the usual suspects: sleuths, spooks, and anyone else who wants to either plumb or avoid the depths of the personal privacy data hemorrhage on the Internet. It's rare to find anyone who is not affected in some way -- at least not in the United States.

This book has been updated and rearranged and offers new chapters on: obtaining completely anonymous smartphone numbers; publishing web pages for your small business without registering your home address; creating aliases including names and legal identification; how to respond if or when your personal data leaks onto the Internet, and how to purchase "invisible" homes and motor vehicles.

Bazzell explains in explicit detail how your personal information gets on the Internet. For openers, think telephone numbers, home addresses, birthdates, family member names, email addresses, vehicle ownership, voter records, and social network activity. Then he shows how you can remove much of this information. Some data falls in the category of "public records," not meant to be removed, e.g. real property ownership, court records and voter registration. Still, there are steps you can try to make even this information less visible. Example: when buying a new home you can absolutely avoid having your name attached.

The book will show you which web search engines you can use to ferret out your personal data, how to do the searches, and where to find websites (examples: Spokeo and Zabasearch) that offer up your personal information for a few bucks (or free) to anyone who wants it. Bazzell provides a page of links to all the sites listed in the book plus a companion page that allows free, one-click access to hundreds of additional links useful for digging up personal information on the Internet. He also makes available custom (free) search tools to make the job easier.

The book's primary audience is the general public -- citizens who feel vulnerable, stalking and identity theft victims, or anyone who is tired of having their personal details exposed to aggressive marketers, nosy acquaintances, or plain low lifes and wants to take back their privacy.There are many ways. The book should be equally interesting to law enforcement and intelligence professionals whose job includes finding bad actors who may be hiding.

Understanding how the information gets onto the Internet is half the battle. Much of the damage is self-inflicted due to ignorance by the public on the hundreds of ways the system leeches their personal data at every turn every day. Bazzell clearly explains all this and how to avoid it happening or erasing the damage once it's done. It's a daunting challenge, for sure.Those who follow Bazzell's tips may not become invisible (to professionals). But to others they may seem invisible -- which is the entire point.

Investigators will find that this updated volume makes a perfect supplement to Bazzell's well known "Open Source Intelligence Techniques" which is, for many, the bible for exploitation of intelligence freely available on the Internet.

Bazzell, renowned as a cybercrime investigator, spent 18 years on the Alton (Illinois) Police Department and was assigned to the FBI Cyber Crimes Task Force. As his students know, he practices what he teaches when it comes to protecting his privacy and has maintained a super low profile.

Excellent, again

Excellent guide to removing personal info from the Internet. This new edition goes beyond instructions to remove names from people search sites. Every aspect of personal life is covered, including a large section on cell phones. Social media is covered in detail, especially Facebook. There is even a chapter on keeping major life events private. The author gives many examples of how privacy measures can be applied, and work, in real life. Parts of the book are in workbook form, to encourage the reader. Anyone who owns a previous edition would do well to get this book. It's much more detailed and comprehensive than the older editions.

The first book that really goes through in an easy to read, yet technical, way of removing information from the internet. I highly enjoy the approach and "how to" from the most technically inclined reader, to the newer digital user.

Helpful in passing 70-649 exam

I recently passed the 70-649 exam with good scores and this book, 70-648/70-649 Transitioning Your MCSA/MCSE to Windows Server 2008 Trainng Kit, was very helpful. However the text of this book alone, nor any other, most likely would not allow one to pass the 70-649 exam that covers a lot of territory via 3 in 1 exam. But if you have several hours [let's say over 100] minimum hands on experience with Windows 2008 exploring it's capabilities and developing expertise for, either on the job or in your training lab, including Active Directory and Roles/Features covered by the exam and remember most of what you learned obtaining your MCSE 2003 you are well on your way to passing the 70-649.

The labs in the book were helpful if you do not have hands on with the topic or want more in depth as were the URL links to additional info sources if you feel you want more detail as configuration info in some cases was sparse BUT keep in mind that there are entire dedicated books covering topics on most of the chapters in this book . Some of the topics such as ADFS and ADRM are very complicated. I did not do the labs in total for those, other then installing the roles and configuring them as much as I could, but read through them until I understood what was being accomplished. The questions on the exam for those topics did not expect you to know configuration in great detail but you need to know in general what they are used for, high level how they work, the flow of the processes, and how authentication is accomplished.

The exam focuses heavily on what is new with Windows 2008 and assumes you have retained your MCSE 2003 knowledge about networking, DNS, Group Policy, Active Directory, forests, global catalog server, trusts, sites, replication, etc. If not I suggest you also study with the Microsoft Press books for 70-640 and 70-642 or if you want some extra reinforcement on those topics.

I found that IPV6 in the book to be a bit overwhelming as in "do I really need to know how to subnet IPV6 and all the interim solutions such as Toredo". There were no hard IPV6 questions on the exam and I believe I had only 1 question. Knowing basics such as what is the IPV6 equivalent of an IPV4 private/public/APIPA address and how to troubleshoot IPV6 connectivity using basically same tools you use for IPV4.

I found the chapter on IIS7 very helpful in learning the new management interface, which has been totaly revamped, and new features such as management delegation and additional configuration for application pools such as recycling, and was all that was needed for the exam. There were also plenty of command line examples for IIS7 and other topics throughout the book and you will see a fair amount of those on the exam where you need to choose the correct command for a task.

The exam places great emphasis on security including what remote solutions need only port 443 TCP open in the firewall, certificates needed for SSL and implementing client trust for such certificates, solutions for revoked certificates, which authentication methods use certificates, CA types and hierarchy to use, distributing certificates to internal and external computers/users, Terminal Services, minimizing risk of having a domain controller in a branch office, and when to use ipsec/EFS/Bit Locker for a stated scenario and which one accomplishes the task. I felt the book did a good job covering those topics.

In addition to this book it would be well worth your while to study Microsoft documentation on what is new in Windows 2008, and individual what is new papers such as for Terminal Services. I felt that I easily got my moneys worth with this study guide.

EDIT 09/05/09: I recently completed my MCITP for Server Administrator and Enterprise Administrator. As the Microsoft Press books mention using Hyper-V to create virtual machines was extremely helpful in my learning process. I found that the ASRock A780GXE mainboard [around $80] with the latest bios update and using a AMD Phenom II quad core processor worked great for Hyper-V and has 4 RAM sockets. Don't assume any modern mainboard or processor will support Hyper-V. Hyper-V is easy to learn. Just remember to install the Hyper-V Integration Services on any guest OS you install right after the install to get networking and the mouse to work correctly! I believe you also need SP2 for W2003 and SP3 for XP for Integrations Services to install.

Spotty writing, missing a lot of material

About myself: I've been an MCSE for 10 years. I'm also a CCNA, RHCE and CISSP. I've had to read a *lot* of manuals and study guides over the years.

I'm a fan of the Microsoft training books and have found them to be excellent resources for preparing for Microsoft certification exams. I originally ordered the Syngress book while waiting for MS finally print theirs...Unfortunately, this book is far below the standard that has been set by its predecessors.

After only 3 chapters, I'm about to toss this book into the nearest wood chipper and go back to using the Syngress one.

Chapter 1 dives straight into IPv6 and breathlessly screams through a very brief description on what it's capable of, Microsoft's implementation of it, notation, scope.... it leaves a lot to be desired.

If you're studying for this exam and using this book, do find supplementary material on IPv6- you'll need it.

Chapter 3 is a complete abortion, and where I found myself thinking that I wasted $45. The instructions on setting up VPN is confusing for it references screens and options that I couldn't find for the life of me. It also fails to mention until MUCH further down the chapter that adding roles to RRAS requires deactivating the service and unconfiguring it. If you're following along with the book, you're going to be wondering how the hell to "Bring up the RRAS Wizard".

Details into NPS is similarly scant, and doesn't go into detail, leaving a LOT of questions unanswered. It seemed more of a "do this, this and this, and hey! it works!". It's stuff like this that devalues the MCSE - excuse me, MCTS now- and why there's tons of "paper MCSEs" walking around that know only how to do whatever was in the book they read.

By the time I got to the scenario questions, I just about gave up in disgust. The second scenario question asks about setting up 802.1x for a company with standalone servers... unfortunately there was ZERO mention of how to set up standalone servers. The answer to the scenario question offered some hints, but I had to go reading through a MS blog entry to figure out what was going on.

Do yourselves a favor- even if you're going to buy this book anyway, don't let this be your only study guide.

Don't waste your money

I'm sure this book might have been useful when the exam first came out, however, MS has changed the exams. Currently, about 40% of the exam is based on new features that come in Windows 2008 R2 for example Direct Access. I took the exam and failed it, using this book was a huge mistake. It is good in that it gives you the concepts and instructions for being a good windows 2008 administrator/architect, but it does not prepare you for the exam. This book does not have any of the new material from windows 2008 R2.
