Must have for structural engineers doing buildings. Clear and concise examples and solutions on how to apply ASCE 7 for seismic design. Also great for studying for the SE Exam. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

This is an excellent reference manual for all levels of structural engineers.
I have all five volumes and they are all excellent. You can use Volume 1 almost everyday in the West Coast.

World's Worst Car Book...

My title may not be entirely true, but this book is very poorly written. The only reason I am writing this review is to prevent anyone else from investing in this poor excuse for a book.

Initially I was intrigued by the concept of this book (albeit, it's been done before). Going in, I knew this book would be nothing more than an entertaining coffee table book at best. However, this book fails to be worthy of any coffee table.

Although far from an expert on European cars, I consider myself a American automobile historian. The "facts" on many of the American models included in the book, are inaccurate, poorly researched and seem to be based on stereotypes and hearsay more than anything else. When an author's research is so poor that he cannot properly identify model year spans and engine displacements, one questions how accurate any of his research can be. His inclusion of some models in the book and excluding others leaves one scratching their head.

Although the author clearly states that the book is his opinion, he doesn't use facts to support his opinion. He simply makes statements and uses no facts for support. In my opinion, this is a clear indicator that the author has little knowledge on the subject matter.

I will commend the book for a nice layout, each car having a description and specifications chart on one page, and a descriptive photographic diagram on the other page. This book has potential to be a entertaining coffee table book, but the publisher needs to find a new author.

In short, this book is fully on inaccuracies, fails to be entertaining, and is a poor investment for anyone.

The World's Most Ignorant & Unimaginative Automotive Author

This book is crap on so many levels...so, I'll just point out a couple that irk me.

There are literally thousands of hilariously awful cars that have been produced in the last century. We're talking stunningly bad - as in they almost seemed purposely designed to be laughed at. Somehow, with all of the many options available, the author (whom clearly knows nothing about cars) chooses cars that are neither funny or could ever be considered as a "world's worst." One remarkable choice is the Lexus SC430, which gains its spot because it "doesn't handle as well as its European rivals" (this certainly isn't a funny reason to add the car to the list nor does it qualify the car as a candidate for world's worst in any way.

Even when he picks cars that are deserving of a spot on the list, his descriptions and facts are not remotely funny. For example, the best he can come up for the hilariously bad AMC Pacer is "reliability was dreadful, it rusted instantly and it was dreadfully slow." Wow, hilarious, Cheetham! You would think he would throw in some funny anecdotal stories or something a bit more inspired.

Coffee Table Car book

There's mountains of books out there for great cars. There's whole libraries devoted to them but what happens to those stinkers that fail miserable, have poor performance, or are just dang ugly. Craig Cheetham has put forth this book listing roughly 150 of what he deems are some of the worst cars in the world. It's easy to go through and makes for an entertaining coffee table book. Each entry gives the basic stats during production and then paraphrases why it is included in this tome. There's a wide spread of vehicles from numerous countries. Craig is very careful to point out, these are only HIS opinions based on ownership, research, and personal views. There are plenty of photos, every entry has at least 2-5 images of the car itself. I'd like to have maybe had one less of the car per page and include a shot of the dashboard features. Unfortunately, many of the problems that make these the worst becomes redundant - rust rot, poor handling, bad performance at speed, and looks.

The book is broken into 5 categories. 1) Badly Built - self explanatory. 2) Design Disasters in which the manufacturers just weren't thinking much on the layouts. 3) Financial Failures in which the car just didn't sell, cost more to make it than it was worth, suffered from lawsuits, or drove a company to bankruptcy. 4) Misplaced Marques in which on company tries to slap a logo and minor change to another manufactures creation. 5) Motoring Misfits which entails oddball vehicles that just don't work properly or became jokes.

Some of these cars went from being famous to infamous due to restructuring or financial problems. There's a huge variety of vehicles including the expected AMC Gremlin and Pacer, the Ford Pinto, Tucker's Torpedo, the Edsel, Pontiac Aztek (horrifically ugly and impractical car), DeLorean, Jeep ripoff India made Mahindra Indian Chief, Reliant Robin (3wheel car), Amphicar, Nash Metropolitan, and even into the Lotus and Lambourghini Espada ranks. Just when you think your prefered brand is safe, one will pop up in this list.

The books inexpensive and was entertaining to go through. Sadly, I can say I have owned four of the cars in this book: Mustang II, Ford Explorer, Subaru SVX, and Subaru XT coupe. Enjoy and find your car.

About the Author
Reuel B. Parker has spent a lifetime building, repairing, restoring, designing, and cruising in sail- and powerboats. Author of "The New Cold-Molded Boatbuilding" (International Marine, 1990) and of numerous articles for "WoodenBoat" and "Boatbuilder" magazines, he has been a devotee of sharpies since his childhood on the shores of Long Island Sound. He is currently putting the finishing touches on a 60-foot Virginia pilot schooner; he plans to move his design business aboard and go cruising.

A valuable reference, but needs better pictures.

A well thought out book on the processes involved with building a boat. It assumes a basic carpentry/handyman level of knowledge, and other information sources would certainly be required for information on wiring, rigging and other detailed finishing work. The main detractor for this book is the quality of the photographic images. Mr. Parker refers at times to details which were probably quite evident in the original pictures, but were lost in the publishing and printing process. Overall, a valuable addition to my expanding reference library on how to build a boat, and a confidence builder for the amateur boatbuilder.

Very general overview of boatbuilding. I am looking for more specific guidance of the process. It's an easy, fast read to it's credit. Gives me a good sense that a project of this nature is doable for me. So, for that reason, I'd recommend it for anyone thinking about wanting to build a boat!

Great book

This book it full of excellent building tips and tricks. It is the how to for Reuel's designs. I'm giving it a 4 star because the photos really do suck, too small and lacking detail. But then, I'm not sure he was planning to write this book 20-30 years ago when he took the snap shots in the book. Still worth buying if you're infected with the boat building bug.

About the Author
: Alan Tussy teaches all levels of developmental mathematics at Citrus College in Glendora, CA. He has written nine math books-a paperback series and a hard-cover series. An extraordinary author, he is dedicated to his students' success, relentlessly meticulous, creative, and a visionary who maintains a keen focus on his students' greatest challenges. Alan received his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics from the University of Redlands and his Master of Science degree in Applied Mathematics from California State University, Los Angeles. He has taught up and down the curriculum from prealgebra to differential equations. He is currently focusing on the developmental math courses. Professor Tussy is a member of the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges.

Diane Koenig received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Math Education from Illinois State University in 1980. She began her career at Rock Valley College in 1981, when she became the Math Supervisor for the newly formed Personalized Learning Center. Earning her Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics from Northern Illinois University, Ms. Koenig in 1984 had the distinction of becoming the first full-time woman mathematics faculty at Rock Valley College. In addition to being nominated for AMATYC's Excellence in Teaching Award, Diane Koenig was chosen as the Rock Valley College Faculty of the Year by her peers in 2005, and, in 2006, she was awarded the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award as well as the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges Award for Teaching Excellence. In addition to her teaching, Ms. Koenig has been an active member of the Illinois Mathematics Association of Community Colleges (IMACC). As a member, she has served on the board of directors, on a state-level task force rewriting the course outlines for the developmental mathematics courses, and as the association's newsletter editor.

World Voyage Planner - Amazed

Bill and I are currently circumnavigating aboard BeBe and own most of Jimmy Cornell's books. Our copies of "World Cruising Routes" and World Cruising Destinations" are bookmarked, earmarked, pencil-marked, and coffee stained. We have used them extensively on our circumnavigation.

In the past few months Jimmy's new books have become available. We received "Cornell's Ocean Atlas: Pilot Charts for All Oceans of the World" (Ocean Atlas) several months ago and just received "World Voyage Planner." I opened "World Voyage Planner" and closed it 5 hours later. I can sum up my opinion in one word, amazed!

Our first two books by Jimmy were priceless, filled with the best ocean sailing and circumnavigating information available...every circumnavigator I know agrees with this. His latest book, "World Voyage Planner," is jam-packed full of the best information available today...and we all know how information has improved in the past 10 years! "World Voyage Planner" is well organized AND it is very easy to use...I could not believe it. Pick an Ocean, then a departure point...go to the contents pages, then flip to the page and there it is. Jimmy adds facts about the weather, wind, currents and ports all over the world. In fact every route in every ocean and at every season is available in this book.

The "World Voyage Planner" is full of planning charts, pilot charts, tables and really great photographs. Additionally, Jimmy included comments and personal short stories from several well known experts. You will find these added to the pages of the destinations.

If you are going to sail any of the world's oceans or circumnavigate the world, the first book you should own is "World Voyage Planner" and the second one is "Cornell's Ocean Atlas: Pilot Charts for All Oceans of the World."

Editors could have done better...

Generally, this is not a bad textbook on regional and urban economics. It includes brief explanations of quite a number of models of regional and urban development, which makes for an advantage over some of the competing textbooks.
However, the quantity of mistakes in the book is frustrating. Mistakes are aplenty and they are in the grammar and, which is especially troublesome for students, thay are in the math. Outdated links to non-existent sections of the book (have they survived from the first edition?) also do not add to the readability.
To sum up, I hope that the editors will do a better job when they prepare the third edition. In the meantime, students not afraid of stumbling upon the aforementioned issues may find this textbook quite helpful.
