Far from evil, but hardly perfect. Mostly good, yet slightly bad. In other words, these matriarchal mamas look a lot like us. This is a great book for group study.

I love Liz's style of teaching through the Bible. This is a great study to do on your own or in a group. It is nice because every chapter stands on its own and makes it welcoming for studies when someone wants to be involved but cannot always attend.

About the Author
For Elaine N. Marieb, taking the student's perspective into account has always been an integral part of her teaching style. Dr. Marieb began her teaching career at Springfield College, where she taught anatomy and physiology to physical education majors. She then joined the faculty of the Biological Science Division of Holyoke Community College in 1969 after receiving her Ph.D. in zoology from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. While teaching at Holyoke Community College, where many of her students were pursuing nursing degrees, she developed a desire to better understand the relationship between the scientific study of the human body and the clinical aspects of the nursing practice. To that end, while continuing to teach full time, Dr. Marieb pursued her nursing education, which culminated in a Master of Science degree with a clinical specialization in gerontology from the University of Massachusetts. It is this experience, along with stories from the field-including those of former students, now in health careers-that has informed the development of the unique perspective and accessibility for which her texts and laboratory manuals are known. In her ongoing commitment to students and her realization of the challenges they face, Dr. Marieb has given generously to provide opportunities for students to further their education. She contributes to the New Directions, New Careers Program at Holyoke Community College by providing several full-tuition scholarships each year for women returning to college after a hiatus or who are attending college for the first time and would otherwise be unable to continue with their studies without financial support. She funds the E. N. MariebScience Research Awards at Mount Holyoke College, which promotes research by undergraduate science majors, and generously contributed to the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where she provided funding for reconstruction and instrumentation of a cutting-edge cytology research laboratory that bears her name. In 1994, Dr. Marieb received the Benefactor Award from the National Council for Resource Development, American Association of Community Colleges, which recognizes her ongoing sponsorship of student scholarships, faculty teaching awards, and other academic contributions to Holyoke Community College. In May 2000, the science building at Holyoke Community College was named in her honor. Additionally, while actively engaged as an author, Dr. Marieb serves as a consultant for the Benjamin Cummings "InterActive Physiology¨" CD-ROM series, and is an active member of the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS). "Anatomy & Physiology," Second Edition is the latest expression of her commitment to student needs in their pursuit of the study of A&P.

Book Package came with everything that was needed
By Amazon Customer
I have seen a few comments/questions regarding what is included with this textbook. I am hoping I can clear up some confusion. I just received the "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)". This package came with the Human Anatomy & Physiology textbook, A Brief Atlas of the Human Body, Interactive Physiology 10-System Suite (CD ROM), and the Student Access Code for Mastering A&P. If you need the whole package, this is the one to order. Also, it is important to note that the textbook comes 3-holed punched and you will have to put the pages in a 3-ringed binder. This book does not have a binding. I personally like this idea because if I know that we are going to be working on chapters 2 and 3 in class, then I only have to bring chapters 2 and 3 to class. I don't have to lug around the whole book. Also, it might be important to note that I ordered this book directly from Amazon and not from someone who is using Amazon to sell their book.

If you order the hardcover book, you will only receive the textbook. The hardcover book (at the time of this review) does not come with the Atlas, CD ROM, or the Access Code.

When you read reviews, make sure to look at the review carefully to see exactly which book/package is being reviewed. When you look at the reviews for "Human Anatomy & Physiology" it will show reviews from people who received the hardcover book, the kindle book, and the 3-holed punched book. These reviews are all mixed together. The review will tell you exactly which book/package is being reviewed. Personally I think this makes it very confusing but if you look carefully you will find the information you need.

UPDATE as of 1/30/2013
I have just noticed that Amazon is now selling a loose leaf edition without the full package. When ordering make sure you order "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)" if you need the full package. If it doesn't list "Mastering A&P with eText - Access Card Package" in the title then you are not going to receive the full package. Also, it seems like Amazon is making it more difficult to actually find this full package. If you search for just "Human Anatomy & Physiology", this full package is not going to come up in the search. However, if you copy and paste the full title: "Human Anatomy & Physiology, Books a la Carte Plus MasteringA&P with eText -- Access Card Package (9th Edition)", you should be able to find the correct package. I hope you find what you need.

Now that I have started my class that uses this book, I can now comment on using the Loose Leaf version vs a Hardcover book. Overall I do like that I can take a few chapters to class versus taking the whole book. Its much lighter and I enjoy that. The only bad thing I have found about having the loose leaf version is that you have to be more careful with the pages. The whole book is 3 holed punched and needs to be put in a 3 ring binder. When turning the pages, if you aren't careful, you can tear one or two of the holes on a page. It's usually nothing a little tape couldn't correct but if you are the kind of person who is rough on their books, turns pages aggressively, throws their books across the room, then you might want to invest in the hard cover book.

fantastic book, but read my review first
By Validus
I purchased this book a few semesters ago and it is a great text book. This text book you will want to keep for future references.

With that said.. Do yourself a favour and just get the past edition. I returned my 9th edition. I just do not see the justification to charge someone almost $200 for a new book when the previous edition is almost the exact same, with just replacing of pictures. The 8th Edition can be purchased for less than $15 bucks here on amazon (ISBN-10: 0805395695 ).

I am pretty certain that most college students are pretty much on the verge of being broke, or soon to be for that matter. Always try to get the previous edition if you can, your save a lot of money, around 1/5 the price. These publishers just drive me nuts, I understand they need to make money, but come on, most of these books are never completely rewritten and they come out with a new edition every 2-3 years and those editions like this one, are almost exactly the same, except for replacement of pictures and a few updated stories/examples. It seems crazy how a book that is just two years old seems to be considered no longer usable.

--
*Update*: For most A&P students, your cover the first chapter all the way to the nervous system. In A&P II your probably start with the Endocrine System.

Your professor may require you to get Mastering A & P. This requires that you use a on-line website that allows you to take some tests, quizzes and other exams. Getting the older book, will save you money, so you will be able to purchase the other software. The access code is $55, if you want the eText/eBook included, then it is $110 and that will include the 9th edition. The My Mastering A & P website, is good for 1 year. If you take AP1 in spring, you will still be able to use your Mastering A & P on the same access code if you take AP2 in the fall.

Do not be fooled by changed pictures or rearrangement of chapters. Seriously, the human body has not changed in the past two years. We still have the same muscles and bones and, yes the kidneys still filter plasma. ;)

Everything I needed for close to half cost vs school bookstore
By Morphis
My package included the Brief Atlas, Access Code Card, 10 System Suite CD Rom and Loose Leaf book. I called my school to verify that the access code card as infact the only one I need because the ISBN numbers didn't match. They said YES. So through Amazon I paid $136 (no tax and free shipping) for all the bundle but through the school it would of been $272 plus tax and shipping.

Thank you amazon, and it did arrive almost exactly 48hrs from when I ordered lol. (actually a few hours early :)

Review
"As the very first introduction to philosophy of film… The Philosophy of Motion Pictures is ideal for generating new and wider philosophical interest in film as a technologically evolving art form. …[The book] does beautifully what any good introduction should: It leaves us with a sense of deeper understanding but also an eagerness to continue the conversation." (Katherine Thomson-Jones, Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism (vol. 66, issue 4))

"Carroll is arguably the foremost philosopher of film writing today. With the assistance of a handful of other philosophers, he has created a vital and lively philosophical specialty out of a field that was mostly moribund prior to the 1980s. The Philosophy of Motion Pictures deserves study by anyone seriously interested in the philosophy of film. The clarity with which it is written and the broad scope of its concerns make it a book that deserves serious attention and discussion." (British Journal of Aesthetics)

"One of the more insightful scholarly approaches to cinema in recent years. The book explores film…with several interesting and intellectually stimulating and satisfying chapters." (RogueCinema.com)

"Scholarly, detailed and thoroughly-argued … .It is a fine book. Persuasive and informative and will undoubtedly become a key text in cinematic studies." (Metapsychology)

"Carroll provides a useful compendium of the central problems and ruling concepts in contemporary film aesthetics. Recommended." (Choice)

Review
"In this outstanding book, Nol Carroll has brought contemporary philosophy to bear on the status and definition of cinema as art, remarkably enriching the way we think about and experience motion pictures. A masterpiece of clarity and insight."
—Arthur Danto, Columbia University

"This is a beautifully organized, agenda-setting text. With verve and lucidity, Carroll summarizes core debates and advances original accounts of everything from the essence of film to the criteria of evaluation."
—Jesse Prinz, University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

From the Back Cover
The philosophy of motion pictures has typically been explored in a top-down fashion, whereby the essence of motion pictures is identified – usually understood in terms of photographic film – and every other feature of the film is weighed in relation to that essence.

The Philosophy of Motion Pictures offers a new approach, championing the concept of the moving image in a more freestyle manner. Motion pictures are defined in a way that not only embraces the media in which moving images exist, but which also affirms the variety of purposes they may legitimately serve. Characterizations of key cinematic elements – the shot, the sequence, the erotetic narrative, and its modes of affective address – are not deduced from first principles, but rather from topic to topic in a piecemeal fashion. The result is a more pluralistic review of this emerging field of study than is found in more conventional texts on film theory.

Topics include film as art, medium specificity, defining the moving image, representation, editing, narrative, emotion, and evaluation. These topics reflect the legacy of traditional film theory for the contemporary philosophy of the moving image, while suggesting a new direction for theorizing the motion picture.

If you enjoyed my sentence
By Amazon Customer
This is a fundamental introductory book on motion pictures as seen by a movie enthusiast. Extremely wordy in an attempt to tie various subjects, drawn from an extensive bibliography list, this book strives to provide an erotetic medium for the reader, but leans toward the writer's definition of art. Holy cow! That last sentence describes the book well, but isn't the most exciting thing to read. If you enjoyed my sentence, you'll have a hard time putting this book down. On one hand it's an introductory book, on the other you might have to spend a few days watching the same films the author has to follow along - and keep a dictionary handy. Not a bad book and the author put a lot of work into it; I really had a hard time rating between three star and four. I'm giving it the benefit of the doubt because it does point to further reading on many of the points. If looking to this book for inspiration on your own motion picture ideas, you might end up with the same questions you started with.

Interesting
By Aurlie Ahoudji
I am reading this book in a 200 level philosophy class: Philosophy looks at film. The book is very interesting, I am learning some stuff about cinema and art in General that I never used to pay attention to.

Did not help me financially
By Cody Brotter
I thought with knowledge came power, but I guess "power" meant "Amazon.com receipt" on 1/16/11 (that's when I bought this book). Reading this has yet to translate into satisfactory funding for film ideas I have had. Giving it 5 stars because Carroll finally dared to tackle society's #1 taboo.

About the Author
Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve (1685 - 1755) was a French novelist who wrote the story La Belle et La Bete (Beauty and the Beast), first published in 1740. Based on a tale that dates back thousands of years, Villeneuve's story is the oldest known written version. It was the length of a novel and after her death in 1755, the story was abridged and rewritten by Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont. Beaumont's version was published in 1756 in her Magasin des Enfants, a widely popular publication. She gave no credit to Villeneuve as the author of La Belle et la Bete and so Beaumont is often referred to as the author of this famous fairytale. Her shortened version is the one best known today. Walter Crane (1845 - 1915) was an English artist and book illustrator and, together with Randolph Caldecott and Kate Greenaway, was considered to be one of the most influential children's book creators of his generation. Crane was part of the Arts and Crafts Movement and produced not only paintings and illustrations for children's books, but also ceramic tiles and other decorative arts. From 1859-62 Crane was apprenticed to wood-engraver William James Linton and had the opportunity to study work by many contemporary artists, including Sir John Tenniel, the illustrator of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.

An Honest Reflection on Human Fallibility
By Gryph
Individuals who read this book hoping to find an ultimate explanation of why Leslie Van Houten should be freed or why she should remain in prison will find neither. What they will find is a claim that ultimately each of us must accept responsibility for how we write the narrative that is our life. Our choices about our relationships with others, our world, ourselves have outcomes which can never be certain, especially when we love another individual. Love is an act of faith and never an act of reason. That love remains haunted by past choices, is vulnerable to present circumstances, and often times fearful of the future. This is the story Dr. Chiaramonte gives us in attempting to peel back the layers of his relationship with Leslie.

Some might find his references to the drug culture of the times off-putting, but the fact remains that this culture was very much the context of the time. Anyone who has lived through the sixties and seventies as a young adult will recognize the reality that individuals from all walks of life--entertainment, academia, business, and ordinary working people--were experimenting, attempting to artificially define who they were, and sometimes just trying to run from life. The book doesn’t attempt to either justify or condemn human behaviour in this regard; it simply reminds us of human fallibility, the need we have for love, our jealousies, and our biases, and ultimately our responsibility for who we are.

The fact that Dr. Chiaramonte philosophically reflects on the nature of choice and the fallibility of humankind adds to the depth and richness of the story. The doubts he expresses, the questions he gives rise to, raise the novel from the level of the superficial to the thoughtful, from the sensational to the sincere. Whether this story will help or hurt future hearings Leslie may have is uncertain. What is important is that we have a new perspective, which when listened to, may take us nearer the truth.

The existential tale beneath
By A. Mills
This is the existential book for the 21st century but straight from the heart of 20th century modernity. The Mason killings - a murder that shook modern society to its roots. A series of senseless acts that quite literally mixed enjoyment with pain, crime with entertainment. A story that has been told and retold through various accounts until now. Chiaramonte messes with our minds with the tale of a tender love story between himself and Leslie Van Houten (one of Manson's disciples). Based on his experiences and numbers letters between himself and Van Houten, Chiaramonte does not let the murders get in the way of telling his felt story, i.e., the one where he falls in love with a beautiful and fragile woman who is going through a series of trials that would alter her life and image through the decades. Chiaramonte does not try to revive her image or minimize her crimes. Instead he writes a poignant existential tale in the vein of Albert Camus. No guilt, no psychoanalysis but life stripped bear where all we are left with is that people live existential lives and in so doing make choices that allow us to see them as human - like us, but can also make choices that challenge every fibre of our being: all in the same embodiment and often in the same spaces. His first work of fiction (he has written academic books) Chiaramonte is a talented writer and you make just come out of reading this book with a profound sense of angst that is well worth the ride.

It feels so real...
By mrGott
I started reading and to be honest it took me inside the story you know. I love it, really. It feels so real and I'm actually in the story - and that's what I love about it. I didn't know much about Leslie, but as a novel itself, and for me, for a regular reader - it's exciting.
I did researches on Leslie. And by now, after reading the book I'm getting to know her better, what kind of person she is, what she is in life.
In overall - it's very smooth to read, I somehow relax while reading as it takes you inside the story. And truly I can't say when for the last time I had so much pleasure reading a book.

The Myths We Live , by (Routledge Classics), by Mary Midgley

With a new Introduction by the author

'An elegant and sane little book. – The New Statesman

Myths, as Mary Midgley argues in this powerful book, are everywhere. In political thought they sit at the heart of theories of human nature and the social contract; in economics in the pursuit of self interest; and in science the idea of human beings as machines, which originates in the seventeenth century, is a today a potent force. Far from being the opposite of science, however, Midgley argues that myth is a central part of it. Myths are neither lies nor mere stories but a network of powerful symbols for interpreting the world. Tackling a dazzling array of subjects such as philosophy, evolutionary psychology, animals, consciousness and the environment in her customary razor-sharp prose,The Myths We Live By reminds us of the powerful role of symbolism and the need to take our imaginative life seriously.

Mary Midgley is a moral philosopher and the author of many books including Wickedness, Evolution as a Religion, Beast and Man and Science and Poetry. All are published in Routledge Classics.

Blinded by Science
By Dr. Richard G. Petty
A wise man once counseled me that whenever I wrote, spoke or teach, to always stick to what I know. For once someone drifts outside his or her own area of expertise, they are likely to start making fundamental mistakes.

Sage and obvious advice, but nonetheless advice that is often not followed by experts in one field who are then thought to be an expert on everything. One of the most misquoted and misattributed people in history may well be Albert Einstein. For more than a century his name has become synonymous with genius, so some have assumed that he would have wise things to say about everything from God to politics.

This book, although a few years old, deserves to be resurrected and remembered as one of the best examples of a professional philosopher taking on some of the worst excesses of "Popular science." If this book were to come out in a new edition I am sure that Mary would have a great deal of fun with all those people who claim that quantum mechanics is the explanation for everything from how to run a business to the behavior of stock markets. Sadly it is not, and some of the authors of such books have taken "surprising" short cuts.

Mary Midgley is known to be a combative philosopher and here she takes on those scientists who breezily tell us that their equations will help us to "Know the Mind of God." To which we have to pose the Emperor's New Cloth's question: "Who and when was it decided that meaning, purpose, good and evil, are all subject to the laws of the material universe? And secondly that they are to be found in a series of equations that will almost certainly be re-written in the future?"

The answer to the question, "How and when did this happen?" can probably be traced back to the 1930s, when a number of influential scientists at the Universities of Oxford and Cambridge embraced an extreme Marxist and Leninist position and advocated a mechanistic and deterministic science that would be able to provide the answers to absolutely everything. In effect they firmly believed in the idea of a scientific priesthood that would hold all the keys to the kingdom of truth. There are still many professional scientists who believe to this day that science as it is now will be able to provide all the answers to "Life, the universe and everything." And by using their positions of authority to promote the idea in popular books, they try to persuade us that current scientific models can answer any question and anything that cannot be explained - including data on parapsychology and unorthodox healing - is therefore "Woo."

Someone once said to me, "Science works, it has given us telephones, computers and airplanes." That is the crux of the problem, and it is a problem: it mixes up science and technology, and allows "scientism" to flourish - the notion that science has ultimate authority over all other interpretations of life and over all other fields of inquiry. And ultimately scientism would have us believe in a universe without value, meaning or purpose. Throughout the essays in this book, Midgley consistently points out that scientism has created a dangerous myth about how the universe operates, and that myth has informed everything from the way in which we treat the environment to the way in which we practice medicine.

Midgley writes that we must continue to develop new ways of thinking, and she points out that the development of ideas of ecology, ecosystems and Gaia are all examples of a welcome move away from the competitive nature of scientism to a more cooperative relationship with each other and with other life forms. In other words we have to understand that we have been mislead into believing a seriously flawed myth, and if we want to achieve lasting change in the world, we need to change those myths. Happily that process is already underway.

Highly recommended.

Covers Much Ground, but Lacks Detailed Analysis!
By Kevin Currie-Knight
Mary Midgley has written an important book that, in true Midgley fashioin, straddles the middle ground between deference to science and its efficacy, and a critical eye of some goings on in the scientific community.
This book is about 'mtyhs' and their importance in science. Unfortunately, 'myth' might not have been the best word to describe Midgley's enterprise. In this book, she is NOT, a.) saying that science is a myth (that it is not trute), b.) using 'myth' to mean 'fairy tale', or c.) going on a fashionable post-modern lit-crit 'exploration' exploring the history of mythology as it relates to science. YEEEECCHHH!
Mary Midgley is much too smart for that. Rather, 'the myths we live by' are those metaphysical concepts that bleed into science now and again, masquerading as part of testable science: concepts like the gene as selfish replicator, materialism that would reduce mind to matter, the AI view that humans are smart machines, etc. Not that these concepts can't be valueable at times, but concepts like these are philosophical assumptions, not not testable fact.
To give an example of Midgley's intent here, my favorite section is that on the bran/mind conundrum that scientists are itching to resolve by pretending the mind doesn't exist. Midgley (and this reviewer) both have confidence that the mind is caused by the brain and that dualism is not tenable. But here's the problem. "Explainling" the mind by neurons and synapses IGNORES the emprically obvious: I can see neurons in brains, but can't 'feel' them in my mind. The brain and mind 'feel' of different qualities, and any explanation of the former doesn't necessarilty 'explain' the latter.
Other theorists like Dennett, say that the first person is an 'illusion' put forth by our genes to aid survival. If so, then it is not an illusion anyone (including Dennett) can 'stand back from' long enough to check whether it IS ACTUALLY an illusion (as one pulls stick that looks bent out of the water to find a straight stick). Others like Blackmore posit memes - units of culture (whatever such units consist of) that infest our minds while we are just passive vessels, waiting for memes to duke it out and replicate. Midgley responds with the obvious: if we are asked to believe that, then isn't it WE who are asked to believe that, and doesn't that in turn create a dilemma? If we are asked to believe that we aren't willfully in control of our minds (but the memes are), then how is it that we could willfully believe that at all? All of this is attempts by scientists to push explanatory theories farther than they seem to be able to go. IF materialism works on a physical level, then we must force it to explain mind. Midgley's answer? The mind seems to resist phsysical explanation in that way. What explains one thing brilliantly, may be clumsey when applied to another.
That was just my favorite example; there are many more. The point she is trying to make is that while 'myhts' are essential to science (mtetaphysics can not truly be seperated from it), we must watch how we use it. In the tradition of William James, Midgley warns that the world is quite pluralistic in its qualities and we may just need a pluralistic approach to dealing with it. Grand unified theories? Don't be so sure. Universal acids? Probably not. Ultra-reductionism? No matter how much we can reduce, there will always be whole organisms that need explaining just as much.
The only complalints I have are these: first, as a long time Midgley fan, I feel that she is, in some ways, writing the same book over and over again. This tends to happen to philosophers that say really original or contreversial things, as thhey keep having to re-explain themselves. If you've not read Midgley before, or not much of her, I wouldn't worry about this. If you have, read it but you might end up skimming some sections.
The second complaint is simply that as this book is ony 170-some pages, and she covers so many areas (myths), she doesn't really go into any in as much detail as I wanted to see. Otherwise, no complaints.

Deconstructing the Disembodied Thinker
By Lance and Lindy Cummings
I didn't actually realize this book was about environmentalism/ecologies until about halfway through. In the process of examining the fundamental premises and conceptual structures that underly our general attitudes towards the earth and animals, Midgley does a nice job exposing the legacy of Cartesian duality in Western philosophy and how that sets up a "disembodied" thinker that can somehow exist outside our ways of knowing, experiencing, and relating to the world. Ironically, this thinker without a body is usually implicitly gendered male. Though Midgley doesn't dig deep into her sources, this book is a very readable critique of Cartesian duality that can help develop more embodied approaches to philosophy and ethics. As a bonus, this will also give the reader a better sense of why there is so much conflict between science, religion, and different approaches to taking care of the environment and the world, primarily by identifying the different myths that structure these worldviews (and that includes science).

Dark, confronting and very Carey
By A Customer
Before he won the booker prize for Oscar and Lucinda Peter Carey was writing short stories for journals and the like. Carey enjoyed success from his first short story collection, The Fat man in history, and then came out with the darker more broody War crimes. Highlights include "A Schoolboy Prank", a macarbe tale of revenge by a group of professionals on their old school teacher and "Kristu-Du" a story of the delusion of an architect (somewhat loosely taken from the story of Nazi architect Albert Speer). Macarbe, inventive and always a little funny Carey provides a collection worth reading over and over again

Short stories by Peter Carey
By Joe Pierre
"War Crimes" collects but a few great stories by Peter Carey. After reading a few of these stories, you won't be satisfied knowing there are more out there -- therefore the preferred and complete collection to find is "Collected Stories." Check out my review of Carey's "Collected Stories" here which includes all of the stories found in "War Crimes."

"Collected Stories" by Peter Carey.

Here are the complete (26) short stories of Peter Carey in a single volume, including those collected in the books "The Fat Man in History" (Crabs, Peeling, Life & Death in the South Side Pavilion, Room No. 5 (Escribo), Happy Story, A Windmill in the West, Withdrawal, Report on the Shadow Industry, Conversations with Unicorns, American Dreams, and The Fat Man in History), "War Crimes" (The Journey of a Lifetime, Do You Love Me?, The Uses of Williamson Wood, The Last days of a Famous Mime, A Schoolboy Prank, The Chance, Fragrance of Roses, The Puzzling Nature of Blue, Kristu Du, He Found Her in Late Summer, Exotic Pleasures, and War Crimes), along with 3 previously unpublished works (Joe, Concerning the Greek Tyrant, and A Million Dollars Worth of Amphetamines).

Peter Carey has risen to fame as a novelist, having gained notoriety from such works as Oscar and Lucinda (which garnered him the Booker Prize), Jack Maggs, The True History of the Kelly Gang, and My Life as a Fake. However, like most writers, his debut publications were short story collections and "Collected Stories" finds his mini-masterpieces all in one place. I started reading Carey during a brief residence in Melbourne (I'm a short story fan and was looking for an Australian writer to compliment my travels -- I think it was a travel guide that pointed me to Peter Carey). I bought "The Fat Man in History," but after being blown away by the first few stories, I returned it for the complete "Collected Stories" and never looked back.

Many of the stories have a surrealistic plot, such as "Do You Love Me?" in which the work of cartographers plays a role in the dematerialization of places and people, "Life and Death in the South Side Pavilion" in which a man attempts to shepherd a group of horses that keep dying by falling into a pool of water, "Peeling" in which a man's lover unravels into nothingness, or "Exotic Pleasures" in which captivatingly beautiful birds murderously overwhelm the world. Others center on human relationships, such as "Room No. 5 (Escribo)" in which a couple traveling in a foreign land fall in love in the midst of a military coup, "Happy Story" in which a man balances his love for his girlfriend with his passion for flying, "The Uses of Williamson Wood" in which a woman confronts her abuser, and "He Found Her in Late Summer" in which a man sacrifices himself for his lover. The stories are difficult to describe further because they're not really "like" many other authors I can think of. The language and character interaction are spare but powerful (reminiscent of Joe Frank -- see joefrank.com), the stories are brief, often divided into terse sections/chapters and focusing on the bizarre or fantastic (like Vonnegut), and there is a recurring theme of futility in impossible situations and suggesting a larger metaphorical meaning (evoking Kafka). Each tale leaves a strong emotional impression -- I found myself eager to read the next, but not wanting to finish too soon and exhaust the supply either.

Although "Collected Stories" is the complete collection of Carey's short works, it isn't as available (in the U.S.) as is "The Fat Man in History." But trust me, after reading a few of these stories, you won't be satisfied knowing there are more out there.

After reading this short story collection, I tried a few of Carey's novels. None ever matched the power of these short works. There have only been a few other authors whose stories made such a mark. I also happened to read "Letter to Our Son" by Carey while browsing in a bookstore -- a very short tribute to his son's birth, but also great little story that sticks in my memory.
