About the Author
Donna M. Gollnick is an international consultant for accreditation. She served as Senior Consultant for the transition of the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) to a new accrediting organization, the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) after being the Senior Vice President for NCATE for 25 years. She has had an extensive career of national leadership in teacher education as well as continuing national leadership in multicultural education. She is lead author of a leading text in multicultural education: Gollnick & Chinn, Multicultural Education in a Pluralistic Society, 9th Edition. The author contradicts them self by using opinions and not facts to slander those that don't fit the profile in the chapters discussed. I felt insulted at points, as an Anglo-Saxon female teacher reading comments about how I'll never be able to teach a student of a different race, class, sex, nationality, etc. to the fullest potential because I will never understand those students. It would be different if facts backed every degrading statement. I would accept researched declarations and statistics (which does happen for some topics and are great resources to trust), but most are not backed.

So thank you for making me feel inferior and bad about myself for being something out of my control. As if there wasn't already enough garbage out there to make me feel bad about myself, I didn't need a book used for a master's level program also to bring me​ down.

To start, I consider myself to be a moderate on the political spectrum. I have a bachelor's in history and my focus was on Soviet history. And let me tell you, this is it baby, communism right here. I had to read this for a class pursuing my masters in teaching and barely passed because the content is so divisive and ugly. From cover to cover it labels and generalizes every single possible social group and spends almost no time at all mentioning anything people have in common. It presents opinions on what is right and wrong and is highly critical of ideas like individualism and merit. It also assumes that being a member of the majority means you are closed off and don't care about other groups and everyone needs to be forced out of a shell. The only parts of this book I appreciated seemed like really common sense that mom and dad should have taught you about tolerance and empathy, not college course material.

Book arrived ready for the binder I already had. It has been a valuable resource as we explore how to implement a foundation of multicultural systems in our classroom. It was a well written book which was easy to read. The case studies were relevant to planning for a multicultural classroom. What I liked best was the underlying message of 'base your conversations on facts...not beliefs." The researcher in me appreciated the reminder to verify what really are our differences and similarities...not just listen to sound bites.

This book is simply awesome. It explains the matter in a way that it sticks but never sounding like it is written for children or retards.
The book consists of three parts interwoven throughout the book. For beginners start with Blue level one and only do the parts marked Level One, once you mastered that basic understanding you return to the start of the book and go on with the parts marked Level Two with more in depth knowledge, after that return to the beginning again for part three, Level Three, in depth advanced knowledge is where its at at Level Three.
I utterly enjoy this book, I keep picking it up again to read another part en enjoy the notion that i actually get it!
It is rather an expensive book compared to so many other Cardio books out there and i have many of them at home but this one is worth every penny and i could have done without all the other books had i found this one earlier.

Best EKG book out there...student perspective

If you want to really understand EKGs and be a complete boss whenever an EKG needs to be read, then get this book. I do not like the "review" style books even though sometimes they are necessary if you are short on time. But if you have the time, and really for a book as great as this you should make the time, then get this and truly understand EKGs. I hated the feeling of trepidation when seeing EKGs in the past. Now I see them and it's actually "fun" and I feel confident rather than apprehensive. 5/5

The best thing about this book is the concrete examples, not just the critique. It shows us over and over again how problems are not solved by extensive programs and studies, but by getting people together and building relationships. The most important of those, and often missing, is the relationship between the client and the consultant. This book shows over and over again that when the consultant finally talks to the client and establishes a relationship, problems begin to be addressed and solved. About the Author
Karen Phelan is a cofounder of Operating Principals, a consulting firm that replaces bad business practices with ones that work. A former engineer with degrees from MIT, she spent more than a dozen years as a consultant with Deloitte & Touche and Gemini Consulting and afterward worked in management at Fortune 100 companies.

Well written book...but was this misleading title necessary?

This is yet another anti-consultants book title that does not match the book's content. Maybe the publisher likes to ride the wave of critical books about the consulting industry, fine, but then the book should be specific about how the author "broke the company". Far from it. On page 109, the author states that" I haven't personally broken any companies...". It's one thing to use a catchy title, it's another and quite dishonest to claim something you are not providing.

That's the reason I rate this book 2 stars, to make a point that dishonesty should not pay.

If the book were marketed as "how management fads cause more harm than good" or "how bad HR tools and performance systems demotivate your workforce", I would have awarded 4 or even 5 stars. Why? It's a very well written, partially funny, and important book that touches upon the core of many problems in Corporate America - the passion for implementing the latest management fad with total disregard for effectiveness and costs. I can only agree with Karen Phelan's observations about crazy HR systems, complicated and untested leadership tools, and other methods of questionable value. How much of the blame should go to management vs. consultants is hard to argue, but both sides have incentives to bring on new tools all the time. I think the book should be a must read for all HR people who really think that their tools and methods are effective and helping the company and its employees. Same goes for consultants, strategy departments, and all executives. I very much enjoyed the author's authenticity in describing her experience, stories, and limits of prescribing alternative approaches. In sum, this contrarian book is worth its money.

Hey Look, He's Not Wearing Any Clothes

Karen is the "kid" in the crowd who finally points and shouts that the emperor has no clothes. Rank and file workers have known or suspected as much for a long time, but the allure of a fad is just too much to resist. That shiny "thing" that well-meaning (or perhaps not) consultants dangle and twiddle in front of your eyes that will transform "your" company or entity into one of the great ones......It's now OK to say no, good judgment by people who know their business and their workers is the only reliable "secret" to success.

"Just Say No" to Consultant Perpetrated Nonsense

Managing is hard and it's especially hard to manage people. It is seductive for managers to reach out to consultants offering shiny, super-sounding solutions to make their lives easier. But pause before you buy. Karen Phelan does an amazing job of pulling back the covers on many of these solutions and showing the resulting bed bugs that infect organizations. Yikes. Best, she offers some relief for getting rid of them and trying healthier alternatives. The best part for me was when she takes my field, HR and leadership development, to task. We have unwittingly perpetrated many over-wrought, wooly headed performance management, succession planning and leadership development tools that managers are routinely asked to put up, and sadly, often do. Leaders, if something feels wrong and doesn't make good sense to you, reach for Karen's book. You just might get the insight and courage to "just say no" to nonsense.

A nice study guide

I liked this book. It was written well and went from one topic to another with ease. My favorite part is that there are practice test, and if you get something wrong it explains why the right answer is what it is! Some parts can be a little dry for reading, but let's get real this is a study guide after all, not a novel. I felt everything was explained well, and it even helped me to understand some of the things I didn't quite get before. If you have any questions feel free to ask and I will try my best to answer them. I received this free in exchange for my honest unbiased review.
